Whew, that was a whirlwind two and a half hours of public testimony on the 2030 Bike Plan.
The whole blow by blow of the hearing is here, but the takeaway message is that City Council is leaning strongly in favor of approving the plan and digging up funding. Well, at least that’s exactly what Mayor Sam Adams said as he closed the hearing and delayed the official vote until a later date: “Iโll take money for this plan wherever I can get it… This is gonna pass folks, don’t worry.”
Other choice quotes from the hours of citizen testimony:
“I havenโt been on a bike in 30 years. Itโs going to cost someone a lot of money to put me on a bike again.”
โI think of bicycles the same way I think about broccoli. Itโs good for some people, but itโs never going to be popular.โ
“Donโt listen to people who say this plan is for a special interest. It is no more a special interest than the fire department.”

UPDATE 2/5: HA! I love this debate going on in the comments thread. You guys are funny.

To win a election or recall… you need 50% plus 1 vote. Cyclists only make up about 6% of the population. I think that Adams realizes this the most.
Car culture is dead. Bikes are the future.
You are living in a dream world, hart.
Bike culture is dead. Feet are the future.
Foot culture is dead. Thanks, tough actin’ Tinactin!
Foot culture is dead. Log rolling is the future.
And I demand more log rolling lanes damn it. We’re 1% of the population and only 0.0004% of the transporation budget is spent on log rolling facilities. God damn gashole Republicans… grumble… grumble….
I’m just glad this blog finally covered some bike news!
I clicked on this just to read Blabby’s inevitable grouchy old man comments.
