What’s a movement without some rhythm? The 100+ days of protests in Portland helped inspire creators to, well, create. Young artists and veteran music-makers alike took to the streets and their microphones—speaking out boldly about police violence, the movement, and a shackle-free vision for the future.

As part of my joint-publication with the Portland Mercury, BlackOut: A 5 Year Retrospective on Portland’s Racial Justice Protests, I’ve curated a playlist of some of my favorite songs by Portland-based hip-hop artists that came from this time period.

Below the playlists is a bonus track from yours truly. While I wrote this song before the protests, this was recorded live during an action in 2020 in front of then Mayor Ted Wheeler’s condo. It was here, where I’d announce my candidacy for Portland NAACP vice president.

You can also find the playlist on Tidal.
