I confess to being generally disappointed with Portlandia‘s feminist bookstore sketch: It mocks some pretty tired stereotypes, and I feel like it would be so much meaner (and thus, probably, funnier) if it moved its target to the earnest young bike riding, art-making lesbian set. That being said, even I can’t be too grouchy about this just-announced fundraiser:

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of IFC’s hit comedy Portlandia cast a spotlight on the city of rose’s local feminist bookstore In Other Words with their deadpan portrayal of two feminist store clerks. This summer they’re returning to the bookstore in an even more important role— to help keep the doors of the store open by transitioning it into a feminist community center.

Fred and Carrie are hosting an In Other Words Fundraising Event on Saturday, August 20th at 6:30pm. Join them as they auction off a walk-on role in season two of Portlandia, tickets to see Carrie’s band Wild Flag, a voicemail greeting from Fred and much more.

It’s hardly the first time In Other Words has cried give-us-money-or-else (they threatened closure 2009) but supporting non-Amazon book sources is more important these days than ever. (Though the language of this release is a little weird—they’re already a “feminist community center,” as far as I know.)

In Other Words (14 NE Killingsworth), $20-40.

Alison Hallett served nobly as the Mercury's arts editor from 2008-2014. Her proud legacy lives on.

  1. Sayin’ it again: I thought the bookstore sketch was pretty tonally accurate. Now, that’s not to say it was actually funny.

  2. I agree rich bachelor: I shop there every week to pick up literature and pee on the seat… Not v e r y fun.. I am reading, ‘Bitches on bikes and the hoes who love them.’ It is a love story.

  3. How about a story line mocking our mayor? Like what would have happened if he were hetero and got caught with a 17 year old girl?
