Tonight and tomorrow at the Newmark, the U.S. premiere of The Butterfly Lovers, performed by the Bejing Dance Academy Resident Dance Company. Show’s at 7:30 pm, tickets are $30-60, more info here.

At Powell’s, Jake Adelstein reads from his memoir Tokyo Vice, about working as a police beat reporter in Japan. (You can read Matt Davis’ interview with Adelstein here. Sample quote: “And did his wife mind, when he told her he’d had to put his fingers inside a prostitute in the line of duty? ‘I don’t think I told her that,’ said Adelstein. ‘I think that’s probably one of the reasons why this book is a precipitator of our probably impending divorce.'”) That’s downtown at 7:30 pm.

And at 7 pm at Broadway Books, Ariel Gore reads from her new book Blue Bird, a pop psychology study of female happiness. I found it sort of harmlessly trite, but the O‘s review is positive (or at least, disinclined to say anything too critical. “Some readers’ frustrations still may be understandable.”)

Alison Hallett served nobly as the Mercury's arts editor from 2008-2014. Her proud legacy lives on.

  1. Matt,
Still Sounds good to me. I’m seeing some old friends tonight but after the talk maybe i can convince everyone we should get post talk drinks there. I assume you’re coming. I’m going to read a chapter that didn’t make the final cut because of space considerations–so new stuff. Expect to see you there.
