If you’ve been keeping track, you probably know that although recreational cannabis sales were legalized in Oregon, the state’s cities and counties were still given the right to opt out, banning producers and retailers from setting up shop. In places where voters didn’t approve the statewide measure, the process of opting out is simple, but those cities and counties essentially seeking to overturn their constituents’ earlier vote will have to take it back to voters.
While it should be noted that even in the areas that are opting out you can still grow and consume your own bud, just not buy or sell it, it’s useful to know where you’ll be able to re-up your supply as you explore the vast wonders of our state. The OLCC is keeping a handy running list so you can know before you go.
So far the no-go zones include Douglas, Umatilla, Harney, and Malheur counties, as well as the cities of Ontario, Brownsville, Vale, Nyssa, Sandy, Island City, Sutherlin, and Junction City.

Sandy, the little town I grew up in, where I found my first bag of weed on the side of the freeway after a trooper-stop, will not be playing along? Cool. When I go back to my old home town, I can smoke joints behind the church and feel as much like a reprobate as I did 40 years ago…
It’s messed up that these places are subverting state law.
We need a bill that blocks them from receiving any tax money resulting from our good sense. Watch their citizens start squawking when they see what their hillbilly officials have done to them!
@SouthFastSoutherner – You realize that weed is still illegal at the federal level, right? Do you think it’s messed up that Oregon is subverting federal law?
Uh, you do realize that the law ALREADY states that cities and counties that disallow production and sales will not be receiving tax money from marijuana, right?
Although with the contortions the legislature went through to concoct this new law, I can’t really blame you if you couldn’t keep up.
We’d love to know which dispensaries in Portland will sell to 21+ in October. All of them? The ones that choose to?
