The Box is gonna be a big film for Richard Kelly: After making everyone fall in love with him thanks to Donnie Darko, Kelly’s next movie was Southland Tales, which was originally titled—and this is totally true—Hey, Fuck You, Audience: Try to Make Sense Outta This, Suckaz! (I really liked HFYA:TTMSOTS!, and only partially because it featured Buffy singing this song, but I think I’m the only one who felt that way. Well, me and the Rock. And maybe Stifler.)
ANYWAY, The Box is inspired by an old Twilight Zone episode, and it sounds pretty great. Hit the jump for some more details that’re starting to emerge on the flick, which is already completed, but won’t be released until this fall.

The film takes place predominantly in Virginia, 1976.
The film was digitally photographed using the Panavision Genesis camera. In my audio commentary on Tony Scott’s Domino, I mentioned that I would never shoot a 1970s period piece using a digital camera. My position on this changed when I saw David Fincher’s extraordinary Zodiac. It can be done.
There is more than 300 visual effects shots, which required eight months of post-production. The digital work-flow of the Genesis was essential to completing these visual effects properly.
Win Butler, Regine Chassagne (of Arcade Fire) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy, frequent collaborator with Arcade Fire) recorded more than 80 minutes of score for the film.

When you call your movie The Box (though it used to be called Button, Button, which isn’t much better), put Cameron Diaz on the poster, and put a big red slit down her face, it sends a pretty strong subliminal message. And that message is, “THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT PERIODS AND VAGINAS. IF YOU COME SEE THIS, CAMERON DIAZ IS GOING TO HAVE HER PERIOD ALL OVER YOUR FACE.”

Dude, Southland Tales was awesome. Everyone seemed to think that it was Inland Empire levels of gratuitous. Everyone was wrong.
