In the world of stand-up, April Clark and Grace Freud of the comedy group Girl God carry on a legacy that goes back decadesโat least according to them.
โWe are the most famous trans comedy duo of all time,โ Clark said in an interview fresh off a performance at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival in Los Angeles.
โYeah, I think we can actually for sure say that,โ Freud echoed. โName one other.โ
โI actually canโt think of any other trans comedy duos, I wish I could,โ Clark said.
โAre you sure, what about Abbott and Costello?โ Freud asked.
โFair, okay. But weโre more famous than them for sure,โ Clark responded.
โTrue, but Who’s on First? is actually, when you think about it, a really cogent and beautiful exploration of gender identity,โ Freud said. โLike who am I first?โ
Interviewing this duo ahead of their upcoming performances in Portland and Seattle felt like trying to talk to friends who only operate on the same comedic wavelength. They each built off the otherโs absurdity over nearly an hour, and they rarely broke.
Freud is a longtime comedian who has written for television shows such as Rick and Morty and The Eric Andre Show. Clark, who wanted it to be known that she no longer has bedbugs and doesnโt want to elaborate on that, grew up in Seattle.
โI was hanging out with Bill Gates all the time. I did serve him popcorn at a movie theater once,โ Clark said.
โHeโs kind of a bitch, right?โ Freud interjected.
โEh,โ Clark said.
The duo first met where so many great friendships begin: On Twitter. They said they both connected during the pandemic over a shared sense of humor.
โAt the time, I had never done comedy in my life. I was planning to stay in grad school and become Dr. April. That was what I was going to make people call me,โ Clark said. โBut then I met Grace, and she just assumed that I was a comedian.โ
โI molded her in my image of her and am still doing it, there are a lot of twists to come,โ Freud recalled.
โThere are some really exciting things coming for my character in the future,โ Clark added.
As for the origin of the name Girl God, it was something Freud had been holding onto for just such a moment in comedy history.
โI had it in my back pocket for a long time as a name I wanted to use on something since years ago when I lived in Chicago. I just thought it was perfect because it was so good,โ Freud said.
โIf anyone can come up with a better name, Iโll kill myself. Good luck,โ Clark pledged.
โYeah, if anyone can come up with a better name for what weโre doing, we are in too deep, so youโll just make us feel bad,โ Freud said.
Some fans and critics categorize the groupโs humor as โalternative comedy,โ a genre Clark wrly embraces.
โSince I was a very young child, Iโve always wanted to be an alt-comedian. Thatโs kind of been my dream for a long time,โ Clark joked.
โMy thing with the term โalt-comedyโ is it doesnโt mean anything,โ Freud said.
โIt means everything to me,โ Clark responded.
โWow, thatโs beautiful,โ Freud said. โYou know what, this is my turnaround Liar Liar, The Santa Clause, end-of-movie moment. Alt-comedy actually does mean everything. Iโm a proud alt-comedian now, youโve shown me the error of my ways, April.โ
After letting the spirit of alt-comedy into her heart, Freud did reflect on the extent to which the group makes their comedy palatable to others.
โI think essentially we just saw a lot of queer and trans comedy that we donโt necessarily view as comedy. We were like, โWhat if we did something together that was funny and wasnโt just empowering, or wasnโt even trying to be empowering at all?โโ Freud said.
โ…[Comedy] that wasnโt just about how โnormalโ trans people are, where the punchline is weโre normal,โ Clark added.
โWeโre not trying to just be like, โHere is why trans people are just like you,โโ Freud said. โWho cares?โ
โGrace, Iโve been live-streaming the whole interview. I just got a message. Youโre canceled,โ Clark said.
โGood! We can start getting that podcast money, baby. Weโll launch that Patreon,โ Freud said.
