Garth Ennis’ series Preacher is one of my favorite things, so I guess today is the day I join the nerd fray and wring my hands about an upcoming comics-to-film adaptation: DJ Caruso just announced that he’ll be directing the film. I haven’t seen any of his other movies (Disturbia, Eagle Eye), but I Am Number Four was better than it should have been. Still, his is not a name that makes me think “Oh, of course! He’ll make a worthwhile movie out of that totally unfilmable comics series.” (Too bad it’s not 1999, as Kevin Smith could pull it off. Equally too bad they didn’t go the Walking Dead direction and film it as a TV show or miniseries.)

Alison Hallett served nobly as the Mercury's arts editor from 2008-2014. Her proud legacy lives on.

  1. OMG Kevin Smith would absolutely shit all over this book. Have you actually ever seen any of his movies, Alison?

You’re right that it should have been a series, and the only man who could bring it justice is Wim Wenders. Think about it.

  2. I kind of like Kevin Smith.

My Copy of Gone To Texas has a laudatory quote from Smith on the cover: “More fun than going to the movies!” he said.

Reportedly someone later said to Smith “Well, maybe one of yours.”

  3. Smith gets a lot of shit, and fair enough (Jersey Girl, Cop Out, etc.), but Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy? The Clerks cartoon? Even Clerks II? And his spoken-word DVDs? Solid stuff, and pretty defining when it comes to some pretty big parts of ’90s cinema. The guy’s hardly bulletproof, but I’d watch his Preacher in a second.

  4. I could see 90’s Smith doing a good job. Would he have cast Joey Lauren Adams as Tulip O’Hare? Only the gods know now.

Nowadays Cronenberg would have been a sweet choice. He’s done a good comic adaption too, which is one more than most people.

  5. Smith’s C, M, CA, C2 were all, and are still, good. I know it’s become de rigueur to poop all over his work but no one’s done the combination of totally dumb and rather smart/insightful like him. If anything, it’s given backwards baseball cap-wearing dudes a sense of purpose. And he seems to have public appearances down pretty good, despite all the weed. If he ditched that and preserved his functional capacity, he could do something cool again.

  6. Preacher? Psh.
Wake me when someone starts mangling Hitman.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have a middle school full of children whose musical tastes need to be scoffed at and insulted.

  7. A: I loved Dogma. A lot.

B: An HBO miniseries would have been nails

C: 10 years of fanboyz and suprisingly girls talking about the ideal director, actors, and medium? Looking forward to that stopping.

    D: Why now?
