German Oktoberfest, which takes place over two weeks in Munich, is a two-century old beer bonanza attracting over six million people from around the world. It’s a booze bacchanalia of revelry, dancing and singing where everyone seems to be able to understand German (or a drunk version of) no matter where they’re from. Oktoberfest officially kicks off on Friday, and to celebrate, German beer bar Stammtisch is having a two day block party.
Starting at 5 pm on Friday, NE Flanders between 27th and 28th Avenues will be closed off, and at 6 pm a ceremonial keg will be tapped to mark the official opening (just like in Munich). On Saturday, the street party is from noon to 10 pm, with the pub going til 2:30 am. The festivities are happening in a 4,000 sq ft biergarten featuring games, face painting (it’s all ages until 10 pm), a barbecue with grilled chicken, pork and sausages from Stammtisch chef Graham Chaney, and (wait for it) live German music. There are also liter commemorative mugs and glasses for sale, while some of the proceeds benefit the local Youth Guidance Association.
There’s no doubt that Stammtisch knows its German beer—there will be special Oktoberfest beers from the likes of Ayinger, Paulaner and Hofbrau—but will it match the mad, Germanic authenticity of the real thing? Quite possibly, as owner Dan Hart will most likely be sporting lederhosen (and so should you) and ladies are encouraged to wear dirndls. And this, after all, is a city that knows and loves its beer and can party as hard as any Bavarian. Right? Stammtisch, 401 NE 28th, September 19, 5 pm–10 pm; September 20, noon–10 pm
