Commissioner Saltzman,
Portlanders have a wide range of experiences and opinions about the Portland Police Bureau, and we all have a vested interest in the law enforcement that keeps our streets safe. After recent tragedies involving Portland Police Officers’ use of deadly force, it would be a benefit for the City if you, as the Police Commissioner, were to more clearly express your views on police reform issues to give all Portlanders a clear accounting of where you stand.
In my campaign, I’ve talked openly about my wide-ranging experiences with public safety. From first attending college with the hopes of becoming a police officer and sadly having a close friend taken from me at the hands of Portland Police Officer, I’ve had the opportunity to look at the system like few others.
The City of Portland deserves to know that their Police will be well managed and have proactive solutions to reduce the number of instances of deadly force and have a defined course of action to be taken when the instance occurs. The police, potential victims, and the public at large need to have a playbook to consider in order to have confidence we aren’t making it up as we go.
Portland needs assurance that we have a good grasp on these issues. I hereby challenge you to a public forum where the two of us will debate some of the issues at hand as it pertains to police and police accountability issues, such as:
Should the police commissioner show up to officer-involved shootings?
Should grand jury transcripts be released, or not?
Should officers be tested for drug use?
What role should citizens have in determining whether an officer’s actions were appropriate?
In what type cases should the Civil Rights Division be called to investigate incidents?
How long should it take to complete the investigation?It would be my pleasure to coordinate the logistics upon finding a mutually agreeable time and moderator. I am open to your suggestion of time, location and moderator. Since this is such a critical issue, I will debate you on this topic anytime or anywhere.

He won’t. He doesn’t have to. Between the power of incumbency and a field of challengers Saltzman will win on a walk in the primary.

Saltzman has already won.
The best that Jesse can do is get out a “Please vote down ballot and do not vote for the incumbant” message. Saltzman has already has the city pay for a full color campaign mailer to every resident, under the guise of the “Childres’s Levy”.
Both Saltzman and Cornett have had polls and my guess is that they say the same thing. Saltzman is weak on the police but his high favorable name recognition, so Saltzman’s consultant, “Winning” Mark Weiner, has told him not to mention police, thus he will not. Not to mention that approximately %20 of the 105K that actually mail in a ballot this May, will not even vote for Portland City Council.
As for Cornett, his poll most like showed that virtually no one knows who the hell he is. Hence, this ploy to make some noise with the Mercury readership (wrong demographic for primary voters, BTW) is playing into the hands of the incumbent.
Lastly, do you *really* think that Adams will give the most powerful assignment to a freshman commissioner (should Saltzman do a Coakley, which “Winning Mark’s” dirty Portland pool will prevent), but hypothetically, should Dan loose; there is no way in hell that Sam will give the police to a rookie newly elected commissioner.
Come on Matt, you know how the Portland political game is played.
In response to whether he would take Mr. Cornett up on his offer of a debate, Commissioner Saltzman responded “Uh… I can’t comment on pending elections…I mean litigation – no wait, pending collective bargaining. Yeah, I can’t comment on pending collective bargaining. I will have this debate in… November.”

jessie ought to enlist some of PDX politically-minded ‘creatives’ to help him devise social media tactics & methods to:
1) raise visibility of HIS name & ideas
2) run against a spineless vacant-headed pol whose pr puppet is telling him to relax, sit back, stay outa sight, keep yur mouth shut and run an essentially “rose garden” incumbency type of campaign.

Anybody from that lower ballot COULD WIN against saltzman for the simple fact that discontent with the police boondoggles runs deeper/ is higher than any poll can track (anyone remember the nixionian viet nam era “silent majority”?)

Looks like this race is degrading into chest-pounding may the best man win. This is why I am voting for Mary Volm.
She has over 20 years of experience and is talking about more than emotionally charged ephemeral issues.
While the boys can posture for who has the biggest penis; Mary is first asking people to participate in a conversation on her website about issues that matter most to Portland. I am tires of wanna-be politicians telling me about their hopeful fantasies about what they want to be when they grow up.
For me Mary Volm has the experience to provide the true leadership that Portland needs.
I like Mary too, but the poilitical reality is you can’t beat an incumbent in Portland, unless you have photos of him having sex with an animal.
