  1. “Silly old language! These bills we write are full of language, none of it *means* anything, don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”

  2. Mitt Romney condemned Akin’s comments and called for him to remove himself from the race. Ryan clearly stated “rape is rape” and Republicans removed the “stock” language from the bills. Anyone who takes this disingenuous distraction seriously will be very sad come November. It comes down to the economy, which affects EVERYONE. Black and white. Male and female. Gay and straight. It doesn’t matter who you are. Those who embrace division in society will lose out in the end. Those who compromise are more interested in all of society and much better suited to lead us all back to prosperity.

  3. “It comes down to the economy, which affects EVERYONE.”

A lot of people, myself included, think that the rights of women do affect everyone.

  4. Ignoring the lunacy of a false choice between “division” and “compromise,” thanks to ROM for pointing out that Ryan has the Van Halen symbol imprinted on his forehead.

  5. C’mon, Chuck. Romney condemned Akin’s comments and called for him to step out of the race. Do you really believe that only liberals are interested in “rights for women”? You are completely discounting the other side where there are many conservative women who are qualified to comment on women’s issues. I won’t call you a woman hater if you disagree with them ideologically. Try to do the same. Believe it or not, there are many conservative women who are pro-life. Do they not have a voice? Think outside of the box of Portland liberal extremism and quit trying to use this issue to show women just how “progressive” you are. It might get you laid but that doesn’t mean liberals are the only people out there that value women.

And you might want to consider that there are many Independent voters out there and you are consistently losing their support when you try to demonize good people for wanting a better country for everyone. Mitt Romney is a good man and holds himself and his family to a high standard. That should be encouraged, not demonized.

I’m pro-choice but even that has its limits. What it comes down to is personal responsibility. In the case of rape and incest? Women ABSOLUTELY should have the choice. None of us should have to pay, through tax subsidies, to vacate an irresponsible pregnancy or birth control. The couple involved should pay for that out of their own pocket. That is fair for everyone.

  6. “Romney condemned Akin’s comments and called for him to step out of the race. Do you really believe that only liberals are interested in “rights for women”?”

Not at all, but the platform of the current republican party is one that asks women to allow their male betters to make the tough decisions for them. Condemning Akin’s comments mean nothing to me, as the views he represents are pretty standard for the christian, anti-science base of the republican party. What surprised me was the backlash, seeing as how that kind of talk isn’t all that uncommon for christian fundamentalists that, again, make up a significant portion of the republican base.

” In the case of rape and incest? Women ABSOLUTELY should have the choice. None of us should have to pay, through tax subsidies, to vacate an irresponsible pregnancy or birth control.”

As for your first statement, again, a significant number of republicans, from the christian wing of the party, would disagree with that.

As for the second, who gets to decide when an action requiring medical attention rises to the level of being responsible enough to pay for? Should someone on Medicare not get medical attention if they get into a car accident for which they are at fault? How about a kid who falls out of a tree who’s covered by the Oregon Health Plan? Pretty irresponsible to be climbing up so high. So no cast?

The fundamental problem, and why we’ll never see eye-to-eye on the issue, is that you view abortion not as a medical procedure or a medication, but as some sort of sin. Yours is a view based on a religious belief, and that’s perfectly fine, but it has no place in a discussion of healthcare or government spending.

  8. Comparing abortion to a kid climbing a tree is really reaching, to say the least. The only life involved with the kid is his own. If he needs medical attention for an accident, I stand behind that 110%. In the case of abortion, there is an unborn child involved, whether you want to address that or not. Most, if not all, Christians believe that life starts at conception. I agree with that. But I also fully believe the parents, not just the woman, not only have a responsibility to each other for conceiving the child, but also a responsibility to themselves to take enough care to not use abortion as a means to vacate irresponsible behavior just because it is available and convenient. If they do choose to do, then they should absolutely pay for that themselves. It isn’t society’s responsibility to help them, especially when many people don’t agree with it. That responsibility is theirs to bear alone.

I’m not religious nor do I attend church. However, I will not discount the beliefs of people who have been a long-standing asset to the world. Christians help a great deal more than they do harm, especially in America. Our nation is based on laws that can be found in the bible and our founding fathers recognized freedom of religion is very important to a healthy society. We don’t need dictators telling us what to believe. Believe as you wish. I will do the same.

Also, I’m not Republican. I’m an Independent and I vote with conscience and logic. I will vote for Romney for many reasons. One of the main reasons is the scare tactics liberals are using to demonize good people. Obama’s own campaign has consistently misrepresented Romney and Ryan just to hold power and that is something I will never get behind. We are too divided now because Obama isn’t a decent leader. He certainly talks a good game and that is only reason he is still in the race. But talk is cheap, as they say. His economy sucks and we all pay that price. Sandra Fluke can pay for her own indiscretions. Good luck in November.

  9. @CC. I think it’s pretty sad you waste so much time being unoriginal in a failed attempt to be funny. We’re having an adult conversation here. If you believe that following people around in a desperate manner just to gain attention to yourself is a good way to use your time, be my guest.

I suggest an alternative way for you to use your time. Educate yourself on current events and try commenting in a reasonable manner or risk coming off as boring and useless to society.

  10. @ SJR: I suggest an alternative way for you to use your time. Educate yourself on current events and try commenting in a reasonable manner or risk coming off as boring and useless to society.

  11. Jump on that bandwagon, joneser! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww!

D&W: No need to yell. I see you just fine.

oaeiu: I don’t know why I did it but I watched your video in it’s entirety. I got that B ROLL!

  12. “Comparing abortion to a kid climbing a tree is really reaching, to say the least.”

No, it’s really not, unless you believe that sex is something that should only be undertaken by people trying to conceive. If you think sex is a fun activity that sometimes has negative consequences, much like climbing a tree or driving a car, then the differences are non-existent. You may not be an according to Hoyle christian, but your views are based in a christian philosophy. Again, that’s great, but it has no place in a discussion of healthcare and government.

(I won’t point out the fallacy of the “I shouldn’t have to pay for things I don’t believe it!” argument. It’s never worked for conscientious objectors, and it’s never going to work for the anti-choice crowd, or at least it shouldn’t)

And what if a couple is responsible. What if they’re a childless married couple use birth control and still end up getting pregnant? Does that reach your standard of what constitutes a responsible use of abortion?

  13. I stated my opinion about the tree-climbing kid/abortion opinion very plainly. The tree climber is responsible for himself to a degree but he is still a minor child. Where are his parents? Or, more “progressively” speaking, where is his parent? A minor child CAN have sex but as anyone in law enforcement will tell you, they don’t have the cognitive capacity to do it until they are responsible at age 18. An adult couple has every right to have sex because they are fully responsible for themselves AND there is a NEW life involved. There are overwhelming differences, Chuck. Time to face it honestly.

Fallacy is just a trendy word that people use to make themselves appear to look like they are winning an argument when they are clearly locked in an ideological difference with someone. People who speak plainly are just as smart. I can dazzle you with my spectacular vernacular but I wouldn’t want to come off as an elitist snob.

I will address your last statement. I think that couple is entitled to CHOOSE however THEY want to deal with their own crisis of conscience. They need to make an informed decision for themselves and I would likely agree with however they wished to proceed. I understand the complexities of this issue just fine. This isn’t a black and white scenario. However, I bear no responsibility emotionally or financially to their situation. They have the sole responsibility. Not just after a child is conceived. They also have a responsibility to each other to talk these things out before having sex. That is what married people do. They talk about things. Condoms and pills fail. They know this. They don’t want kids? Blow each other for all I care. Develop a foot fetish. Ass play. Dildos. Strap-ons. I don’t CARE. Just be responsible for yourself. This “anything goes” mantra the left is pushing is bogus. That is an excuse to act poorly and get yourself into bad situation after bad situation. You are certainly free to do it. Just don’t expect others to agree with it.

As far as your religious comments go we can disagree all day about your opinion about me. You don’t know me personally, Chuck. I see no reason to demonize Christians just to please an extreme “progressive” agenda. I see a very concerning rift in society that I strongly believe has to do with poor leadership at the highest level in America. We need a moral compass. We need order. We need unity. Anything else is chaos and divisive and I refuse to support it.

  14. LO I the man, whose Muse whilome did maske,
As time her taught, in lowly Shepheards weeds,
Am now enforst a far vnfitter taske,
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
    And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds;
Whose prayses hauing slept in silence long,
Me, all too meane, the sacred Muse areeds
To blazon broad emongst her learned throng:
Fierce warres and faithfull loues shall moralize my song. COMMENTED EDITED BECAUSE GOD THIS WAS ANNOYING.

  15. That’s funny, cause he was quoted in the NYTimes as saying “Words matter a lot.”

I’m so confused as to what his actual position might be!
