I’m pretty sure this is the Mormon equivalent of swearing up a blue streak:

Mitt Romney is sharpening his warning to Republicans about the consequences of nominating Newt Gingrich, declaring in an interview on Wednesday: “Zany is not what we need in a president.”

“Zany is great in a campaign. It’s great on talk radio. It’s great in print, it makes for fun reading,” Mr. Romney told The New York Times. “But in terms of a president, we need a leader, and a leader needs to be someone who can bring Americans together.”

Not only is equating your opponent to a word you just discovered in a Bazooka Joe strip bad form, Romney’s history is wrong. There were plenty of zany presidents. The only question is: Who was zaniest?

  1. Nixon was the zaniest. His whole presidency was an Andy Kaufman-esque piece of comedic brilliance. You guys didn’t think he was serious, did you?

  2. Teddy Roosevelt challenged visitors to wrestling and boxing matches, and apparently had a mat with the New York seal on it when he was governor. Gifford Pinchot duked it out with him. This is zany.

  3. just as an fyi, Romney was repeating his interviewers from New York Times (they used the word zany). i know this because i was, for some reason, watching The View this morning and this was one of their topics of conversation.
