Hot Dog Eating Contest,
Zach’s Shack, 4409 SE Hawthorne, Saturday, July 31, 4 pm
Catching a whiff of the hot-dog eating contest trend, Zach, owner of Zach’s shack, is attracting throngs of spectators with a hot dog eating contest of his own. Over 12 minutes, 15-20 contestants, vegetarian and not, will rabidly shove tubes of (fake) meat down their gullets, competing for prizes ranging from the Grand Golden T-Shirt, to a Gift Certificate to Zach’s. Don’t miss this good natured and undoubtedly gross event. KS

Three Ring Circus,
Pix Patisserie, 3402 SE Division, Wednesday, August 4, 7 pm, $15
Pix Patisserie has managed to piss the Mercury off a little bit by falsely claiming to have “monkeys” at their Three-Ring Circus event. Read this excerpt from their press release, and come face to face with the source of our confusion: “Come one! Come all! To Pix’s Three-Ring Circus! With three magnificent desserts paired with three spectacular beer/wines, free popcorn, and two monkeys, this has to be the greatest show on Earth!” Well, while the event should still be fun and undoubtedly delicious, we at the Mercury think it’s unfair to tease people with the promise of monkeys. Oh, there’ll be sock monkeys and clapping monkeys at the Circus, but again, NO feces-throwing, bicycle-riding, kitten-petting real monkeys. KS

Enjoy tasty schnitzels, sausages, spazles, and brunches in the Berlin Inn’s beer garden, and bring good old Spotsie along for the ride. Plus, if you truly love your animal, you can order treats like Mutt Mix from the Pooch Patio menu and save yourself a few minutes of beating the dog’s face away from your plate. KS
