- Dangerous Kids
Here at Blogtown we’ve long supported the confluence of geek culture and hard liquor. Long before Michael Cera made a career out of being inoffensive milquetoast with a side of nerd, we were impressing tipsy, bespectacled hipster girls with witty bon mots about Dig Dug’s convoluted lineage, and wildly inaccurate theses on why Altered Beast is, in fact, an allegorical deconstruction of Soviet-era foreign policy.
Thus, tonight’s “Geek Out! @ The Space Room” party (no relation to our similarly named, but legally distinct column) seems aimed right at whatever demographic we represent.
According to the above flyer and the accompanying press release I’m staring at, the event runs every second Thursday from 9PM until 2AM. I’d type up the list of reasons why this soiree might appeal to you, but beyond bolding the words booze and videogames, you’d be better served by reading the actual PR blast.
Hit the jump for a verbatim blockquote.
Quoth the email:
Starting Thursday March 10, 2011, Dangerous Kids and Deco Distilling will be hosting โGeek Out! @ The Space Room,โ a monthly event that offers geeks over the age of 21 an environment to party with their peers and celebrate geek culture. โGeek Out!โ will be held on the second Thursday of every month at the Space Room as part of a rotating series of weekly parties presented each Thursday by Deco Distilling. The Space Room Lounge is located on the corner of SE 48th and Hawthorne in Portland, OR.
โGeek Out! @ The Space Roomโ will take place from 9 P.M. until 2 A.M. and will feature geek-related music provided by Dangerous Kids’ founder DJ Switch, giveaways, console video gaming and welcomes all appropriate, theme-related costumes and cosplay.
Drink specials will be exclusively created โgeek-themedโ cocktails featuring Deco Distilling flavored rums. Selections will include sci-fi favorites Romulan Ale and Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters as well as other video game, comic book and sci-fi themed drinks. These drinks are only offered during the Geek out event which occurs monthly at The Space Room Lounge.
Sponsors for Geek Out! @ The Space Room include Dangerous Kids, Deco Distilling, Things From Another World, Old Town Computers and Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade.
In short, geekery plus booze plus a rad group of sponsors. Add some dude in a confusingly sexy horse costume and that’s the entire Internet in party form.

Sometimes I wonder if we’re in some kind of geek bubble here in Portland, if things like video games and comic books are being overvalued, and if it’s all going to burst in the near future. Is there going to be a backlash? Does the PGC3 represent an unstable high water mark of the flooded geek market? Is the cultural value of geekitude going to crash like so much over-inflated mid-2000s real estate?
Then I remember how much I enjoy that nerdy stuff and stop caring.
@JSTteckert: Just put your geeks in a mylar bag and they’ll retain their value.
