Like dance movies? Hate all the expository plot? The Reel Music Fest‘s got you covered with a great film called NY Export: Opus Jazz. It’s a new rendition of Jerome Robbins’ 1958 ballet, with a bunch of hot young things from the New York Ballet doing their best jazz dancing. Basically it’s like the finger-snapping Gap commercial from your youth without the product hawking, OR more accurately, it’s like the best moments from Robbins’ West Side Story without all the hokey love bits and the fake Puerto Ricans.

NW Film Center’s Whitsell Auditorium

w/ballet soloist Ellen Bar in attendance

I’m not afraid to admit my like of athletic dance/West Side Story. This film looks pretty cool, actually.
I am dissapointed to learn the abnormally tan George Chakiris and we-didn’t-even-bother-to-make-her-tan Natalie Wood weren’t actually Puerto Rican, though. Thanks a lot, CF. Makes me angry. Makes me wanna go get in a stylized dance fight.
Walk tall! We’re Jets!
My mom would LOVE this.
