FILM—As part of their Orson Welles at 100 series, the NW Film Center is taking Portlanders through some of Welles’ best-known—and least-known—films. Tonight they’ve got his stone-cold classic from 1958, Touch of Evil, starring Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh—if you’ve never seen this noir on the big screen, don’t miss it. ERIK HENRIKSEN

  1. I envy the person seeing this complicated film-noir on the big screen for the first time.
Not a ‘spoiler’ but pay attention to Janet Leighs arm, as it was broken throughout the entire shoot, but Welles found clever ways to disguise it, including just cutting off the cast for certain scenes.
The Infamous opening scene had music put over it in later edits of the film, that Welles passionately fought against, amongst other changes to his film.
He also brought the film on-time and within budget.
It remains a sad thing that this film was supposed to be his triumphant return to Hollywood, helped hugely by Charlton Heston — and yet he still found difficulty financing future endeavors.

I would also highly suggest “F for Fake” to see Welles filmatic essay on the subject of Authenticity and Originality in Arts, as well as exposing some of the pompousness of Art Critics in general….
