It seems like Portland’s seasonal heatwaves increase in frequency and intensity with each passing summer, yet most houses in our typically temperate region aren’t equipped with central air conditioning. If your fans, swamp cooler, or window unit aren’t doing the trick, cool down at one of these air-conditioned venues around town, where you can also have some fun at the same time. You can also call 3-1-1 to locate more cool spaces or check out Multnomah County’s public cooling map, which includes misting stations, community centers, and malls.
Laurelhurst Theater
Centrally located and boasting one of the best neon signs in the city, Laurelhurst Theater is an excellent escape from the heat. Last time I was there, I was impressed by the upgraded bouncy bench seats and the cupholders and tables available to conveniently set slices of extra-cheesy pizza and ice-cold beers. The theater shows first-run films with a distinctly non-corporate chain vibe, offering some of the better concessions in town at reasonable prices (the combo special gets you any micro pint and a small popcorn for $10). If you’re in need of a frozen treat, Cheese & Crack doles out creamy soft serve less than a block away—I suggest a stop there before or after your movie. BRI BREY

Tomorrow Theater and Whitsell Auditorium
These newer additions to Portland’s’ arts-forward movie theater scene are programmed by PAM CUT, formerly known as the Northwest Film Center. Screenings at the Tomorrow Theater often include performances and activities related to the films—think Q&As, bingo, and crafting. This summer, the August Meltdown series shows hot movies on screen (Call Me by Your Name, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Body Heat) while the Tomorrow Theater’s AC blasts. The recently renovated Whitsell Auditorium is located inside the Portland Art Museum—the gallery for new media is right across from the auditorium, so check out Marco Brambilla’s exhibition Maximalist Dreamscapes while you’re there! Films at both theaters are almost always under $20 a ticket, making it an excellent bang for your air-conditioned buck. BB
