It was hot yesterday as a crowd gathered to see a huge range of designs from Altar, kicking off this year's four-day Open Season fashion series. Moving through four collections that included summer, fall, swimwear, and a collaboration with textile artist Rio Wrenn of R.A.W., Altar's rocker-babe vibe featured lots of floaty, sexy sheer layers and a fearless attitude toward wearing lots of black in the sun.

Elsewhere designers Cassie Ridgway and Rachel Marie continued their print habit, with snappy shots of red showing up in lightweight dresses, rompers, and swimsuits, as well as moody florals and graphic motifs. They also introduced a new experiment in party-ready (or hey, why not the office) fringed separates. Altar remains one of the key players in Portland's apparel industry with an all-in-Portland small-batch production model that's impressively prolific and which makes locally made clothing much more accessible than custom jobs will run you. The easy shapes and friendliness to a variety of body types only widen the appeal. If you've yet to stick your toe into the world of Portland fashion, I highly recommend this as a starting point, especially if you have a weak spot for the darker side of culture.
