The BBC is launching a show similar to America’s Next Top Model, but with a distinct twist: the models/contestants all have disabilities. One of the young women had her arm severed in a bus accident, another largely gets around in a wheelchair due to a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder, etc (all seem to be physically disabled, not mentally). Naturally, it’s being marketed as an awareness-raising show, challenging people’s conception of physical beauty and all that. I do hope the intentions are good, though one can imagine a range of motivations among the viewers.
