So I recently ordered some pants online (SO WHAT) and I was tracking the package to see when they would come in (SO WHAT), and this is the information that the UPS Tracker gave me (reads from the bottom-up, FYI):

Theres a (forest) fire in my pants!

  • There’s a (forest) fire in my pants!

Has anyone else ever seen this “Natural Disaster” update via UPS or has anyone heard of any natural disasters that happened in Portland yesterday (besides the good weather)? In any case, I really think UPS needs to learn to choose its rhetoric a little more carefully. Calling a slight delay in shipping a “Natural Disaster” is like calling an incorrect order at a restaurant a “Food Contamination.”

  1. First: the “Natural Disaster” or “Truck Caught Fire” or “Derailment” (I’ve seen all three) always shows up on the destination end, the disaster was somewhere between hodgkins, IL and here.
Second: send the screenshot to failblog.

  2. Here’s my problem du jour with UPS:

I ordered a package and paid extra to have it delivered by today. I see by the online tracking it arrived in Portland yesterday but isn’t scheduled for delivery until Monday, and since I’m headed out of town on Sunday, I called to see if I could arrange to pick it up today.

The guy on the other end said I can’t do that unless a delivery attempt has been conducted. So because it is just sitting in a customer center somewhere in town but hasn’t been sent out yet, I can’t just come get it?!

Maybe I’m missing something here, but if someone called me and volunteered to do my job for me, I’d be ecstatic. Seems like they’d save money and staff-time by allowing me to come pick it up. It would also make space for more deliveries.

I then went to the website to write a complaint about this, and they won’t even let you submit a customer comment without the number attached to the door-hanger they leave after a delivery attempt! WHAT THE HELL!?

  3. Oregonmetry: I managed to pick up a UPS item early before an attempt had been made about 2 years ago. Heard the same thing from the representative at their 800 number, the trick was finding the number for the local facility and sweet talking the person.

  4. @Anony: Yeah, I figured that might be the case, so I’ve been calling every ten minutes to try and do that. It’s been busy all day. Ughhhhh…..

  5. I have a package delayed due to this “disaster,” too. Just got off the phone with them for the third time. Still insisting there’s a disaster in Portland…..

  6. Ok, got some solid news. I had the shipper call their UPS rep, and it turns out there was a mudslide in Montana on the 23rd that derailed a freight train. Google News tells me they cleared it up this morning, so here’s hoping the packages are flowing again.

  7. Here’s the question: Were any of the UPS packages damaged? Or, worse, is my package stuck in one of the 13 cars that were so badly damaged that they’re going to have to dismantle them to remove them?

  8. Yes, UPS representative told me the same thing… a derailment somewhere on the way to Portland. Didn’t mention the mudslide to me, though.

  9. My duluth trading company pants have fallen victim to this disaster too. LAME. I guess a derailed freight train could do that though. O well. I hope I get my pants soon. Never had this happen to me. Nice to know what actually did happen though cause I would’ve been at a loss.

  10. Woohoo! My package finally arrived in Portland at 1:10AM on 6/27. I guess I’ll find out on Monday if it’s still in one piece.
