• Everyone’s happy when more locally designed menswear shows up on the Portland radar, and new brand the Aesthete Society is about to join the fray with an installation event titled Amalgamated Allure. Slated for Monday, October 12 (6 pm) at the Portland Art Museum, it’s all ages and free to attend. They’re keeping images of the finished clothing under wraps, but this sketch will give you a feel:

• Aspiring models: fashion model Ophelia Darkly and photographer Myles Katherine are teaming up to host the Double Dream modeling workshop this Sunday, Sept 27. The $150 fee includes the opportunity to get your questions asked and answered, a mini shoot with wardrobe/makeup, model coaching, and a 8.5 X 11 print to keep. Says Darkly:
This workshop encourages the view that modeling is an art form and provides a creative and nurturing environment where all levels of experience can make something beautiful and ask any question they might have… There are a lot of misconceptions about what it is to be a model… Within the industry, all ages and sizes are not encouraged to be fashion models. Only now are different sized women being accepted on the runway. After a certain age, fashion models are directed to become lifestyle models and forced to abandon their much loved career. Models also do not have rights to their images. The photographers have shows and make money off the images, whilst the model is sometimes seen as a prop. Often, in gallery settings, photographers are the only ones credited. Sometimes, there are entire teams involved with these images such as wardrobe stylists, fashion designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, and models. There is not a single gallery in the USA that will showcase a model’s body of work. Not only are we trying to promote a more accepting attitude about everyone who has a passion for modeling, but also, we are trying to encourage model rights.
• Vintage and antique pickers and browsers, this looks like so much fun: The Junk Bonanza is an established thing in Minnesota, where it’s been around for a decade, and it’s coming to the Pacific NW for the first time Oct 9-11 at the Clark County Event Center in Ridgefield, WA. Says the Bonanza’s Kim Yeager, “It is not like a flea market; more of a happening that showcases aisle after aisle of creative vignettes of beautiful reclaimed and vintage furniture, home decor, textiles, jewelry and artisanal goods, predominantly 40 years old or older. Worth crossing the river for!” I wanna go!
