Sense8, the Netflix series in which eight strangers wake up suddenly sharing each other’s senses and skills, is ending. Though it was created by the nerd-royalty team of the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski, the ambitious series never amassed the viewership required to fund a show filmed on location around the globe. When Netflix cancelled Sense8 in 2017, they got a lot of feedback from the show’s few but passionate fans, and eventually agreed to fund a two-hour finale—available this Friday, June 8—to wrap up the story.

Even for a sci-fi show, Sense8 is complex: The introduction of its eight main characters makes for a long, slow build, and while I ended up caring about the diverse cast, I’ve only got room to discuss the two main things I really like about the show: (1) Its unbeatable South Korean martial artist Sun Bak, played by Doona Bae! (2) The group sex. HEAR ME OUT.

Sense8 offers up a significantly more optimistic view of the future than most Wachowski projects. Instead of an oppressive technological dystopia, the focus here is on global interconnectivity and the value of found families. To the show’s creators, the ultimate expression of this connection seems to be... group sex scenes? It’s a handling of sexuality that is sweet, spicy, and joyful, and the show has at least one functional throuple. (And maybe the finale adds a second? WINK NOD.)

In addition, the character of Sun Bak is flat-out groundbreaking. Women have been written as fighters before, but usually with some sort of uncomfortable compromise like a sexy outfit. Perhaps due to Bae’s willingness to risk unattractiveness—she has a reputation in South Korean cinema for not wearing makeup—or because the Wachowskis are woman directors, Bak is the grittiest representation of athleticism and dominance I’ve ever seen a woman allowed to play. Now that Sense8 is over, it’s unlikely these progressive sex scenes or spartan women fighter types will take hold in the other Hollywood projects—but hey, it was fun while it lasted.
