oil of the gods Credit: clare gordon

One of the highlights of my last week was finding a place to buy avocado oil. I have only been able to find this at the incredible International Food Supply at SE 80th and Stark, and it costs just over $10 for this bottle o’ culinary fun you see below.

Here’s why International Food Supply is great:

1. They stock food from all over the world, some of which you won’t see anywhere else and some of which you’ve never heard of, and their prices are relatively reasonable.
2. They carry avocado oil.

Here’s why avocado oil is great:

1. It has the highest flash/smoke point of any other cooking oilโ€”meaning it’s pretty darn hard to burn food in this stuff.
2. It’s a beautiful green color, like really good olive oil.
3. It’s super healthyโ€”good fat and all thatโ€” and tastes AMAZING.

You can fry with it, cook with it, dress salads with it… it probably makes a damn good moisturizer as well, but that might be going a bit far. Anyway, it’s one of my favorite things. Spread the word.

  1. @ jim – it’s got all the grassy, fruity overtones of avocado, but without the texture of the meat (obviously). it’s not overpowering at all.
@ helevent – why the hell not?

  2. Thank you for posting this. I’ve been looking for someplace close to get some of the more exotic Middle Eastern cooking ingredients. I’ll try the avocado oil. I’m sure it actually would make a great moisturizer. BTW #4, hash oil is a little too concentrated to cook with.

Thanks again! Can’t wait to go check it out.

  3. I went in to Benessere a few weeks ago and they said they weren’t carrying it anymore! Maybe they’ve stocked it again since. I do like that shop.

  4. Not news to me, but thank you for this piece nonetheless. Also, look into red palm and cocoanut oil. Very healthy providing you buy the version that has been processed correctly

  5. Note….red Palm Oil is really only meant for cooking. It has a very earthy flavor which many do not like. Cocoanut oil on the other hand is great for cooking and as a dressing.

  6. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen avocado oil at New Seasons in the past. Will have to give it a try at some point. Grapeseed oil has a high smoke point and a lot of nutritional benefits as well.
