To steal a phrase from podcaster Jon Lovett, “What a week.”

And it was a shockingly ugly one. That said, there was lots of good news to report this week, starting with the stories about people heckling <a href=”https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/20/politics/kirstjen-nielsen-mexican-restaurant-protest/index.html
“>DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and <a href=”https://nypost.com/2018/06/20/protester-yells-fascist-at-stephen-miller-dining-in-mexican-restaurant/
“>White House aide and vampire cosplayer Stephen Miller as they dined at Mexican restaurants. And don’t forget that you, Portland activists, shut down ICE HQ for at least a few days and possibly many more. Your voices matter.

Alright, let’s dig in.

This week, the Mercury <a href=”https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2018/06/20/20728059/good-coffee-company-opens-third-location-in-slabtown
“>reported that Good Coffee has just opened its third cafe in the NW’s Slabtown District. We <a href=”https://www.portlandmercury.com/last-supper/2018/06/20/20703054/paiku-and-painted-saints-are-taking-pie-back
“>visited a pair of pie spots that do some mean chicken pot pies and pasties. And we keep harping on it, but this is your last reminder that <a href=”https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2018/06/12/20543048/portland-wing-week-here-are-all-the-wings-you-can-eat-june-25-30
“>Wing Week starts on Monday, so get out there and enjoy your $5-for-a-half dozen wings at restaurants and bars all over town.

The O <a href=”https://www.oregonlive.com/expo/life_and_culture/erry-2018/06/70bc6ec0967193/new_portland_drivethru_from_li.html#incart_river_index
“>made good on its hunch that Micah Camden is indeed opening Super Deluxe, an early morning and late night fast casual dine-in and drive-thru burger and breakfast joint. The paper also <a href=”https://www.oregonlive.com/expo/life_and_culture/erry-2018/06/41eb89822e5251/kachkas_new_restaurant_opens_n.html#incart_river_index
“>previewed the details behind Bonnie and Israel Morales’ new Kachka outpost, which should open on SE 11th in mid-July. The new Kachka will have a bigger kitchen, a longer menu, and a vodka tasting room on its mezzanine. The old Kachka will close briefly and reopen under the Kachinka banner with a menu that closely mirrors its current happy hour menu.

PoMo <a href=”https://www.pdxmonthly.com/articles/2018/6/14/trifecta-tavern-barman-colin-carroll-to-open-5-dime
“>broke the news that former Trifecta Tavern barman Colin Carroll will open 5 & Dime, a craft cocktail-bodega sometime this fall out on SE 65th and Foster. If you don’t want snacks from the shelves, you can ask for a slice of pizza from Atlas Pizza, who’ll be moving in next door.

Willamette Week <a href=”http://www.wweek.com/restaurants/2018/06/19/new-brunch-spot-la-luna-cafe-gives-you-a-great-reason-to-get-out-of-bed-in-the-morning/
“>visited La Luna Cafe, the new brunch spot in the old Simpatica Dining Hall Space from the fellas who run Laurelhurst Market, Ate-Oh-Ate, Reverend’s BBQ, and Big’s Chicken. Their takeaway? We’ll pass the mic: “[W]hereas Simpatica was a trail blazer—an irreverent Portland supper club whose bold flavors helped inspire Toro Bravo and Laurelhurst Market—La Luna is more familiar. It could very well go on to be Portland’s best new brunch of 2018.” Better get out there and see for yourself before the inevitable lines start forming.

Over at Eater National, Beast’s Naomi Pomeroy wrote an essay about the regret she feels after following in the footsteps of the bro culture that so many kitchens cultivate and how, going forward, she wants her fellow restaurateurs to “burn that shit to the ground.”

And Eater PDX had lots to tell, too, including: <a href=”https://pdx.eater.com/2018/6/19/17480382/beaumont-wilshire-southfork-perlot-patrick-mckee-live-music
“>Word that Beaumont-Wilshire’s Southern-inspired Southfork restaurant is changing its name (Perlot) and its culinary focus (global); a <a href=”https://pdx.eater.com/2018/6/20/17475526/holdfast-dining-inside-architecture-restaurant-fine-dining
“>first look at a very pretty and minimally mod Holdfast, which is hosting its first regular pop-up dinners tonight; Tsuta, Tokyo’s Michelin-starred ramen chain is <a href=”https://pdx.eater.com/2018/6/18/17477182/tsuta-san-francisco-portland-japanese-michelin-star-ramen-soba
“>considering opening a ramen shop here, possibly, maybe; and Fifty Licks’ mobile ice cream truck <a href=”https://pdx.eater.com/2018/6/20/17484750/protest-occupy-ice-pdx-restaurants-chefs-fifty-licks-andy-ricker-nick-zukin
“>passed out free cones to the protesters who shut down ICE’s HQ, while and Pok Pok’s Andy Ricker was yelling “fuck you” on Twitter to a lot of senior administration officials, including 45. One last thing, per Eater PDX: The craft cocktail and vegan eats bar, Victoria, is throwing a dog fashion show this Sunday, which is a pretty wholesome way to wind down a shitty week full of small victories.

Chad Walsh writes about Portland’s food scene and other stuff, too. He makes a mean carbonara and an even meaner chicken larb, and he’ll never muddle fruit in your Old Fashioned because he knows you...
