With the Willamette River running through the city and the mighty Columbia River just to the north, Portland has no shortage of places to play, relax, and eat by the water. We’ve rounded up some of our favorites, so you can dine al fresco with a waterfront view or enjoy a meal before or after sun-soaked activities by the river or lake.

The Deck
Open seasonally, this floating restaurant on the Columbia is perched atop a dock offering panoramic views of the passing boats and epic sunsets. Located at 33rd and Marine Drive, the dog-friendly spot is perfect for pairing a sunny afternoon cocktail with fresh, fried, or grilled seafood. Sip the kitschy and interactive Shark Bite cocktail (the Deck’s take on an AMF), which is a potent mix of vodka, two types of rum, blue curacao, and sour mix topped with a grenadine-filled plastic shark for a “bloody” sweet finish. Snack on a refreshing bay shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, crunchy coconut shrimp, or a heaping basket of steamer clams sauteed in house-made garlic butter and wine sauce. They also have clam chowder on offer, although that may not be the first choice for a hot summer afternoon. With a long list of burgers and sandwiches (ahi tuna and po’ boys!) fish tacos, and more on their extensive menu, this spot is not just a deck, it’s THE deck. BRI BREY
