25 years ago gaming wunderkind Shigeru Miyamoto birthed a mass of pixels onto Nintendo’s Famicom console (the Japanese analogue to our NES) known simply as The Legend of Zelda. Two and a half decades of international acclaim, adoring fan worship and intense hipster nostalgia were to follow.

That’s right. As of yesterday Link, Zelda, Ganon and all those millions of dead moblins are a quarter-century old. Before we all start drinking to forget just how incredibly old that makes us, let’s raise a glass to one of gaming’s most beloved series.

  2. I’m not a gamer, but I absolutely loved the NES & SNES Zelda games.

    I never gave a shit about the object of the games, I just loved moving around the Zelda world, occasionally shooting arrows at things or stabbing someone.

    There are people who say I should leave all of that to a virtual world, but I still haven’t met a problem that arrows or swords can’t solve.

  3. I never had much luck with this game. Maybe it is time to give it another shot. Anyone know where I can play it, short of going to CD/Game Exchange and getting a NES?

  4. @ Marq: I’ve got good news and bad news.

    The bad news is that if I wanna keep my job I can’t point you to the hundreds of somewhat illicit ways to play old NES games on your computer or any number of other devices capable of emulation.

    The good news is that you seem like a sharp lad, so if I were a betting man, I’d guess you could find such things yourself somewhere in the dark corners of this here Internet.

    Sigh… still, I guess he should some small kudos for ironically enjoying and beating a game that I genuinely enjoyed and beat in 1987 at the tender age of 10.

  11. I will admit that I never beat this game. Actually, I’ve never really played any Zelda games except for the second NES game, which I loved. Fuck this game.

    Great overworld theme, though.

  13. Strange. I was playing this just last night on my Wii for the first time in forever. Had no idea that it was some sort of anniversary. Also, I finally beat the New Mario Bros. Wife was out at book club. I’m a loser.
