The Holiday Inn by the Portland Airport is apparently the prime place to be if you’re right-wing in Oregon. A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Northwest Creationist Conference out there. This weekend the ample parking and reasonably-priced drinks at Flirts Lounge play host to the Oregon Right to Life Conference. This year’s theme: “Welcome Life, Protect It by Law.”

The conference will feature Abby Johnson, a well-known anti-abortion activist who quit her job at a Planned Parenthood clinic after watching a “baby ‘crumple’ as it was vacuumed out of a patient’s uterus.” Johnson is on national tour, penning inaccurate editorials in her downtime.

But wait! There’s already a protest planned. Local feminist group Radical Women is planning to be out at the Holiday Inn this Saturday from 8-9AM picketing and chanting. Anyone hot to trot after listening to all the anti-birth control and anti-Planned Parenthood rhetoric that’s been driving our budget discussions recently is welcome to join. Email them for more info.

  1. I’m agnostic, so I don’t really have a dog in the fight, but before you spout your prejudices as fact, you might want to double-check them. While more Republicans than Democrats are hardcore creationists, a significant percentage of Democrats and Independents are as well. And a very strong majority of Democrats and Independents believe in weak creationism. See here:
