GOOD MORNING, PORTLAND!šŸ‘‹

While the sun may be peeping out in your neck of the woods for a minute this morning, get ready for a cloudy afternoon with a chance of a shower, and a high of 65 degrees. Now let's visit MY neck of the woods... the NEWS!

IN LOCAL NEWS:

• As threatened, the King Dipshit administration is appealing last week's double-decker of emergency restraining orders that's currently keeping National Guard troops from invading Portland. And yesterday Trump's legal cronies took their crybaby grievances to a panel of federal appeals court judges, who temporarily ruled that while the Guard members can be federalized, they are still NOT allowed to be deployed to Portland—at least until pro and con arguments can be heard in court by the three judges (one appointed by Clinton, the other two by Trump) starting this morning at 9 am. It's unclear when they'll issue a ruling, but for now, things will stay the same. (So maybe run to the store for some popcorn and nail clippers—so you don't chew your nails to the bone.)

• In heartening news, last week before a Senate subcommittee, Oregon's top military leader, Brigadier General Alan R. Gronewold, testified that the state National Guard's mission if brought into Portland would be two-fold: ā€œOne, to defend America, and two, to protect Oregonians. And so by serving in this mission, they will be protecting any protesters at the ICE facility.ā€ Naturally this infuriated MAGAts across the nation, who only want to see chaos and destruction (as long as it's happening to someone else)—but screw them... because the general was absolutely right in saying, ā€œwe’re the home team, and our job is to protect and serve Oregonians, and we follow lawful orders, and that’s what we’re doing.ā€ 😢

• Meanwhile, the city of Portland is weighing whether they should take over the building that houses the local ICE facility. While the idea was initially floated by Trump stooge Corey Lewandowski, Mayor Wilson has indicated "openness" to the idea of purchasing the building... though if so, the city also noted they wouldn't be ICE's landlord and the federal agency would most likely be kicked out of the building. For the past few months, Portland City Council has been debating whether they should step in and end the ICE lease, in order to make sure immigrants have a safe place to pursue their legal proceedings. Mayor Wilson also nixed ICE Barbie's (AKA DHS Secretary Kristi Noem) idea to set up restrictive "free speech zones" around the ICE facility, because—and apparently Noem is ignorant of this fact—America is already one big "free speech zone." šŸ™„

Trump: "I don't know what could be worse than Portland. You don't even have stores anymore. They don't even put glass up. They put plywood on their windows."

• In labor news, thousands of Portland-AreaĀ Kaiser Permanente employees may be striking and hitting the picket line as early as next week, unless they can come to an agreement on their latest contract with management. The Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, which represents around 4,000 Kaiser employees, announced last month that 97 percent of its voting members authorized the strike—so yeah, they are SERIOUS. Find out all the details and what the consequences of a strike might be in this report from our Abe Asher.

• RIP to Portland chef Justin Woodward, who created the menu at fine dining establishment Castagna, and has died at the far-too-young age of 43 of liver failure.

• If you're looking for a spoooooooky flick (and want to support local indie theaters), then have we got the roundup of scary films for YOU! Our Lindsay Costello has a banger lineup of shudder-inducing flicks to share in her latest, excellent edition of Second Run Portland!Ā šŸ‘»

• But let's say you're searching for some good local theater: Our Suzette Smith reviews Portland Playhouse's newest jam, Paradise Blue, which she describes as an excellent noir that examines Detroit's post-war jazz scene as it runs smack-dab into gentrification and Black community displacement. (Portland doesn't know anything about that, does she? šŸ˜’) Check it out!

IN NATIONAL/WORLD NEWS:

• Hope abounds as Israel and Hamas have tentatively reached an agreement for a ceasefire as well as a trade for hostages and prisoners—though it's unclear who will emerge as leader of the Gaza Strip. Thousands celebrated the tenuous deal in Tel Aviv, as the United Nations also showed their support and began plans to bring life-saving aid to Gaza, which has been mercilessly victimized by the Israeli government. As a reminder that one should not get their hopes too high over this tenuous situation, there's this headline: "Israeli tanks fire to push back crowds of Palestinians hoping to return home." This is the third attempted ceasefire since the start of the war in 2023—so maybe the Nobel committee should hold off on awarding King Dipshit his peace prize?

The Wall Street Journal ruthlessly turned on Trump, using the newest Nobel Prize winners to deliver a sharp rebuke to his immigration crackdown.

• As Portlanders wait for a federal appeals court to decide if we can keep National Guard troops out of Portland, our friends in Chicago are fighting aĀ parallel battle in the courts at the same time to eject the Guard troops that have been already deployed in their city. Over the weekend, Trump activated 500 National Guard troops into Chicago—300 from Illinois, and 200 from Texas—in a move that lawyers are calling illegal, unconstitutional, and unnecessary. ICE agents—who the Guard has been ordered to protect—have been seen flagrantly breaking the law, shooting "chemical munitions at groups that included media and legal observers" and conducting a military-style raid at a Chicago apartment building in which they arrested and zip-tied residents and their children. Monsters.

• As the Republican-caused government shutdown enters into its second week, Democrats currently have the upper-hand in negotiations (at least for the moment) with polling being decidedly in their favor (45 to 35 percent according to a recent YouGov poll), and members of the GOP are beginning to waver over their refusal to extend ObamaCare tax credits, which are at the center of the debate.

Most of the American public does not approve of the way Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is running the nation’s health agencies, according to a new KFF poll, and there’s an erosion of trust in reliable vaccine information from the federal government in particular.

• America's most beloved person,Ā Dolly Parton, has emphatically claimed "I ain't dead yet" after rumors have been swirling on the internet about her alleged poor health. While the singer was forced to cancel some dates and admitted that she had not been taking good enough care of herself, she insists that she's now on the right track and back to work. PHEW!!!Ā

• And finally... here's what will happen if Trump tries to steal Portland's candy.
