In the course of researching the upcoming “Oh So (Queer) History of Portland” tour, Dill Pickle Club Director Marc Moscato directed me to check out these great photos of Portland’s 1987 pride parade. This is back in the day when the jeans were tight, the mayor definitely didn’t ride a pedicab in the parade, and the photos were grainy without Instagram:

If you’re interested in Portland’s queer history, definitely check out the tour this weekend! Full disclosure: I do some work with the Dill Pickle Club but wasn’t involved in this tour at all. I’m just glad it’s stopping at both Darcelle XV’s and Magic Gardens.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. 1987 was the year I left for L.A., so until 2003 this was Portland as I remembered it. Cameron’s is about all that hasn’t changed (there it is, in the top pic).
