Though the strip of queer establishments known as the pink triangle/Vaseline alley has largely been dispersed, there are a few noble holdouts, not least of which is Scandals, which has been around in various forms since way back in 1979, earning itself the nickname of “Portland’s Gay Cheers.” Tomorrow night, they’re pulling all the stops for the anniversary, which they’re calling “Thursday Night Live” featuring live music from The Old Flames, art by Larz Davis, and happy hour prices until midnight, which alone will ensure the party will be off the hook. Oh yeah, and no cover either!

OK, question. As a straight guy, I generally stay out of the gay clubs because I have heard that the patrons of these clubs generally prefer to have an atmosphere of their own. I like to dance, but fair enough. What I’m wondering is, is it ok to attend an event like this that celebrates an anniversary? I would consider attending because doing shit is fun, but I don’t want to be a distraction or a tourist. Who thinks what?
Git yer straight ass over there and dance dance dance. Just don’t be a dick. Expect someone to hit on you and gracefully decline. “Sorry, you’re not my type” said with a smile is fine. You might run into a jerk who keeps coming on. “Look, I appreciate it but really, im straight, just here for the dance party. Sorry!”
Have fun. And if you find yourself strangley enthralled by some guy, well, that’s how we recruit.
