Someday you’re gonna realize that giving us everything we want is the only way to make this issue—marriage equality—go away. Seriously. Giving us what we want won’t stop gay marriage, but it’s the only way to stop gay marriage from getting so much airtime and press. Oh, you fuckers can win one at the ballot box and slow the progress toward justice and equality for all families. But we’re going to keep pressing for our rights regardless. We’re not going anywhere and we’re never going to give up. We’re going to go on fighting you and fighting for our rights and we’re going to wear you fuckers down and you’re going to lose and we’re going to win.
The only question is just how much of your time and money you’re going to waste on your losing effort to stop us from achieving our full equality.
And our equality isn’t going to deprive you of anything. The coming of legal same-sex marriage will not result in “traditional” marriage—opposite marriage—perishing from the face of the earth. That’s seriously not our goal—heck, most of us our products of “opposite marriage.” Once we’ve achieved full marriage equality you can go right on having your “traditional” marriages while we enjoy our “non-traditional” marriages. You can have your opposite genitalia, we can have our matched sets. You can have your vulgar church weddings, we can have our dignified civil ceremonies (and some of us will have church weddings too, of course, but only in churches that support marriage equality). And you can go right on teaching your children that gay marriage is wrong and that gay people are sinful, while we teach our children—most of whom will be straight when they grow up—that love and marriage, gay or straight, are beautiful things and that it’s too bad some hateful, clueless bigots out there can’t see that. And we’re going to live our lives openly and without shame to give hope to your gay children.
And we’re going to keep suing and marching and organizing and electing homos and demanding our rights until we’ve got ’em. Prop 8 didn’t end or settle anything. It ain’t over until we say it’s over. And we won’t say it’s over until we’ve won.
Have a nice day.
P.S. Thanks to everyone who attended last night’s Big Fat Gay Wedding hosted by the Bus Project and the Mercury.

How tolerant
grrrrrr
Yup, polarizing screeds are totally the way to do this.
For 3500 years ( the writing of Leviticus) people of faith have set the standard of tolerance. If bro. Dan wants to blow off a little steam while presenting a factual analysis of what can be the only out come of this fight than I say. GIVE EM HELL DAN-O!!!
Oh, and while your pondering tolerance. you might give a thought as to why a bundle of sticks used to feed a fire and a homosexual are both called a faggot.
ppe, the whole “they’re called faggots becuase the oppressors burned teh geighz at the stake!” thing isn’t supported by any actual evidence. I’m not sure how enlightening it is to ponder the two definitions of the word, with that in mind.
@ samurai pizza cats, Foolish me I forgot to record the link to the article I read that in so I’ll concede the point. Do you deny that Leviticus calls for the execution of gay people? Or that gay people were killed during the inquisition or various murder sprees in Europe? Or that gays were targeted during the Nazi holocaust? Or that even to this day gay people are being murdered in Jamaica, Iran, Iraq all in the name of religion?
With the bloody history religion has I find it laughable that they call me immoral. None of this touches on anything that Dan Savage posted so lets not hijack his post.
Yeah, there’s been a huge amount of homophobic persecution going on for centuries. I just find the “burning times” thing to be kind of silly and willfully ignorant of history.
It’s the same situation when you bring up the Leviticus thing (you know Christians were never bound by the laws outline in it, right?). I could walk you (or a fundamentalist) through the relevant passages in Hebrew, explaining exactly why there was never any call for the execution of the gays, but the finer points would be lost to the agendas that have become attached to the text.
My point, I guess, is that such things don’t matter in the fucking least. While I agree with Dan that the end of this conflict is inevitably going to end in full rights for sexual minorities (sadly, later than it should), I don’t think that it should be a battle of squealing propaganda against squealing propaganda. A sober look back at the founding and history of our country (as shitty as it’s sometimes been…) should provide all the rational arguments to right the current situation.
