Never has there been a better time to roadtrip to the country’s preeminent syrup museum or anywhere else in humble Vermont. The state’s legislature just overwhelming voted this morning in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage, overriding a governor’s veto to make Vermont the second state in one week to legalize gay marriage.

More wonderful hubbies in Vermont shortly.

Unlike Iowa, Vermont has had civil unions for nine years, apparently enough time for politicians and their constituents to realize that legal same sex couples are not dangerous to the foundations of the state or family. And now to quote from the Oregon Constitution: “It is the policy of Oregon, and its political subdivisions, that only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or legally recognized as a marriage.” Hmph.

Anyway, Twitter has been “over capacity” off and on since the news was announced – my theory is that ecstatic tweets about this from everyone and their mothers crashed the site.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. twitter is always over-capacity. I don’t think it has anything to do with Vermont. The Vermont veto-override isn’t nearly as big news as Iowa.

The Iowa ruling was unexpected but the Vermont thing had already been gamed out and just about everyone knew how it was going to go. They were just waiting on the final tally of the votes in the legislature.

  2. In the Oregon who are the “one man” and “one woman” that get to have their marriage recognized? It doesn’t seem fair to have only one valid marraige in the whole state.

  3. Oh and smirk, if you studied history or politics, you’d realize the reason why Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut and Massachusets allow gay marriage is because they don’t put civil rights up to a vote.

So you want to know who to blame for no gay marriage in Oregon? Look around you. It’s all your fellow Oregonians.

  4. Oh and here’s another reason why your name should be STUPID Mirk instead of Sarah Mirk: everyone knows that Vermont has the worst cell phone reception eva! Twitter overload? Impossible! You’re a moron and everyone hates you!

I am kidding with you. Nice article. Thanks. Ben and Jerry make very tasty ice cream. I enjoyed your photograph of it.
