The delivery guy didn't knock or ring the doorbell, they just walked right on in? If that's what happened then the writer can't be blamed for any shock they experienced. It also sounds like the delivery guy may have been standing there a while (20 seconds? More?) before they were discovered which spurs the logical question we're left with at the letter's conclusion.
