Before you scream bloody murder, think about all the people from Washington driving across the river (traffic) just to buy crap from a store in Oregon to save money. Think about all that money saved going to our schools and public services. Think about, if we added sales tax, we can reduce income tax and property tax….. yes, yes, I’m obviously talking to people who have jobs and either own a home or want to own a home in Oregon…. but besides that, think about all the tourists enjoying our food scenes and wonderful outdoor space…. that’s more money WE can save…. Add sales tax please. It’s just a matter of time before it’s a part of Oregon so why wait another year….. You can’t be a sleepy state on the west coast for ever. Sales tax works!
We Need Sales Tax

Trollsplant.
So… You believe that if Portland institutes a sales tax, there would be a corresponding lowering of income and property taxes? Jesus, how naive can you be?
And BTW, $1500-2000/month shoe-box apartments all over the city doesn’t constitute “sleepy.”
Even my dog is on unemployment.
new taxes never replace existing taxes. they just add to them. ask the owners of those stores and the people who work there if they would prefer that washington residents spend their money in washington rather than in oregon.
When I was a kid, the sales tax in California was 6%.
You’d think that with inflation and rising wages, that 6% would also grow enough to satisfy its’ original aims, right?
And what is the sales tax of Cali now?
7.5 to 10 %.
It is naive to think any sort of sales tax would stay at where it started.
just a thought.
I agree vigorously with my fellow “common-taters” I/A, yet I don’t think you’re naive at all. You’re a shill. You want to float a Municipal “junk bond” underwriting. Real good commish for you and we all get to pay .06 more on all we spend. Anyway haven’t you got a dinner party to go to? Get the fuck out of my face! Drop a pin in that too. Would ya?
Whoa, My Medicated Friendly, munis are not “junk”! I should report you for spreading such unAmerican propaganda.
I’ll be eligible for parole come Valentine’s day.
Where would all the asians go to buy their Louis Vuitton bags then?
I have never lived in a place so full of people willing to tax themselves, nor a place with so little to show in terms of city services provided. There is no chance in hell that a sales tax would mean lowering of income and property taxes. It is already expensive to live here. Don’t be an idiot.
All I’m saying is Sales Tax wouldn’t be the end of the world. If anything, it might reduce traffic from everyone flooding in from WA. Plus all the tourists that visit Portland could also help out with our schools and social services… We’re not going to be SF, LA or Seattle…. an no, it’s really not that expensive here if you’ve been saving. 300k for a home on the west coast? 1 hour away from the beach, 1 hour away from the mountains? Come on people. It’s going to happen. Sales tax is coming and I’ll vote for it! Corporations pay shit in taxes in OR. Do you want a Taco Bell in your neighborhood or a taqueria
PANDAPDX, thank you for admitting you’re the asshat transplant who wrote this crap. You are part of the problem, not the solution. Oh darn, people spend money here instead of WA? That seems like a positive for the economy. Please go back to where you came from, we are done hearing how great everything was about the place you left.
O yes, I’m the problem. Go back to where I came from? CRAZY I used to say that too, living in San Francisco, where I grew up… Look, I feel your pain. I used to bitch, then I found Portland, saved, and moved. I’ve never been happier. You can do the same or you can just stay frustrated your whole life and complain about the “haves and have not’s”. Trust me, you don’t want me to move, I’m a good person who cares about the city. Shit, my wife’s a public school teacher with an Engineering degree! Me… well I try to drink and eat only local, ride a bike no car, have dogs… that’s about it….Look your just mad that you didn’t see this coming, or you’re in your 20’s and sad you missed the opportunity…. I was there once man… Move! It feels great! You can always visit.
O and I’m not a fan of living in CA that’s why I moved Butthole. I’m just saying, sales tax is not that bad. And no, people from WA don’t drive to Hawthorne to shop at Buffalo Gap. I’m talking about corporations like the two Home Depots and Best Buys about 15 min drive from each other on the border… those fucking places live there because of the tax break, creating horrendous traffic.
You can argue all you want, but a sales tax will never happen. They have to bring it to the voters of the state for approval, and the voters will NEVER vote for it.
As awesome as you think you are PandaPDX, you became what you complained about. Making you the problem. Except it isn’t your hometown/state, so it’s all cool because you ride a bike! You also don’t understand the basic concept of I, Anonymous; which seems to be especially hard for transplants who don’t like being told their ideas are not appreciated here. Maybe your underemployed spouse can explain that to you?
I don’t want to “save and move” as you did. I like where I live, I just don’t like you or your Californian ideas.
