Today my 11 year old son and I were crossing a crosswalk on bikes when he was hit by a car. He broke a leg and was bruised up, however at the time of the accident we didn’t know how bad it would be as he was thrown 10 feet. Ambulance workers made me sit up front so they could work on him and we had to drive from hillsboro to the children’s hospital in north Portland at around 445pm today.

I was so scared and nervous and I want to thank all you drivers that didn’t yield or move for the ambulance with full lights and sirens. You gave me a place to focus all my anger and fear. I spent 20 minutes wishing horrible, terrible, unspeakable things for every single one of you stupid selfish mother fuckers that wouldn’t move. And not just 1 of you or 3 or 8 no more than 35 cars, I lost track after 35.

Take your heads out of your asses, it could be your kid in an ambulance. Yield to the side of the road, quickly.

To those that did yield, thanks for being bros.

  1. So, for context, 4:45 p.m. is the height of rush hour on 26 heading back to Portland. From Sylvan all the way through the tunnel — and, often, onto 405 — traffic is usually at a standstill. Because each of the three lanes on 26 by the tunnel is an exit lane, this problem often arises with emergency vehicles. How do you get over when there is no “over.” There’s no passing lane and very little shoulder. They aren’t doing it to be assholes: They’re doing it because, under even the best conditions, Portland drivers are completely oblivious. When you hand them a scenario in which all lanes are exit lanes and a packed lane or more has to move for emergency equipment, their brains outright malfunction. I don’t know what the solution is here (as widening isn’t an option), but I assure you these drivers aren’t trying to kill Hillsboro’s youth.

  2. I hear you poster, but what are you supposed to do? do you think thousands of cars can orchestrate for one ambulance no matter how urgent? there’s not a lot of space to work with

  3. Poster, I hope you look forward to your $2000 plus ambulance bill, since AMR doesn’t work with insurance companies you’ll be on the hook for all of it
