Beau Breedlove is back in town, and he’s on KUFO at 8:10 this morning. Loathe as I am to give the young man any more attention, well, I kinda can’t resist hearing about “his feelings” on the Aaron Campbell shooting. From his blog:

Hey friends! If youโ€™re available, tune in to Portland station 101.1fm, KUFO Monday morning for my interview with the KIDD Show.

Iโ€™ll be discussing the book, my feelings about the Adams Recall effort, and my feelings about the Aaron Campbell shooting. In addition, we will chat about my future plans, and other items.

Hope to have your listening ears!

WTF. Listen to the show, and Tweet your responses with the hashtag #beaublove. Either way you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be Tweeting mine…

Update, 8:32: Breedlove has so far said two “shits” and a “fuck” on the air. “I had a Rock Star,” he said. “What, Tommy Lee?” asked the DJ. Ah, offensive. So, if you fancy complaining to the FCC about the language, you should go here. Thanks to @nerdliness for the link. Please let us know when you’ve lodged your complaint. Here’s mine:

Also, why on earth would they ask Breedlove if the cop who shot Campbell was “handsome?”

Matt Davis was news editor of the Mercury from 2009 to May 2010.

  1. As much as we might all think Beau is a crass, attention-grabbing media whore, is it really necessary to get the FCC involved? Exactly what we don’t need is a Matt Davis trolling the airwaves and calling the FCC whenever he finds something offensive.

  2. Thanks for the input, KUFO supporter. But it’s against Federal law to air indecent or profane language, and the FCC sure as hell comes down on KBOO like lightning when that happens. Breedlove said two “shits” and a “fuck.” Case closed. The date, 2/22. The time, 8:20am. The show? “Kidd Chris.” That’s all the info you need for the FCC’s online complaint form, people.

I wouldn’t have been so motivated to file a complaint if the DJ hadn’t asked Breedlove if the cop who shot Aaron Campbell was “handsome.” But he did. And in my book, that’s crossing all the homophobic and offensive lines. I hope the FCC comes down hard.

  3. It’s been pretty amusing the last few months watching the Mercury take the “there’s that little slut that brought down our poor, glorious mayor” tack when it comes to the Beauner.

  4. I’m surprised there’s no 7-second delay at KUFO for stuff like this, especially if they’re dealing with potty-mouthed shock jocks / guests.

And I’m also surprised Breedlove didn’t get a thorough lecturing about profanity prior to the broadcast. Since the fines for these infractions run pretty high– often several thousand dollars– the station manager should have been shitting bricks at the first profane utterance. Is KUFO running on autopilot or what?

It’ll probably take more than one Matt Davis to get the FCC to act, though, so unless some big org steps up its media blitz to encourage complaints (sorry Blogtown, you’re no Focus On The Family), it’s likely nothing will happen.

  5. Breedlove’s response to the show:

Just home from my interview on the KIDDCHRIS radio show on KUFO. Was great! The guys were fun, and entertaining. I was more than happy to have my girl Kristine at my side for support. Even after the experience Iโ€™ve had, I still feel best with a good friend at my side.

I must say, I was a bit disappointed at the direction some of the conversation took, talking about sex and such. But itโ€™s to be expected with a comedy radioshow. I figured they would have a few raunchy comments to make, and I was prepared.

The second bit of the show though, I really let loose! I got riled up about the Adams investigation and the way Iโ€™ve been treated by some of the public and the media. I even spoken about being punched in public for the first time- Some jerk hit me in a restaurant a few months ago because of the whole โ€œScandalโ€. Rediculous. People forget that Iโ€™m a real person, and not just a creation of the media.

Had fun though! Glad I had the opportunity to talk about the book, and how I really feel about the current political climate in Portland.”

  6. Ever since KUFO fired Cort&Fatboy they are dead to me. Make them pay some fines on their crappy morning show.

(And yeah, they’ve never heard of tape delay?)

  7. Technically, Matt, there is a significant precedent in broadcast statutes that allows for what Beauner (looove that nickname) did. It’s called the “fleeting expletive,” and it applies to guests on live shows who let one go that the producers and programmers have no way of anticipating.

Which, as someone noted above, is why many programs have a 7-second delay to prevent even that. But, it is still not grounds for FCC action.

  8. Fleeting expletives are ruled by the FCC and the Supreme Court upheld their ability to fine last year.

Delays have been added because the ruling has been in and out of the courts for close to a decade. There is no technical or legal reason why you can’t delay a broadcast, nor are “live” broadcasts truly live, there is a real delay in satellite transmissions, / adding a few more seconds is trivial.

There isn’t a TV/radio newsroom in the country –backed by investors– that doesn’t have a procedure to manage these types of outbursts, they can cost their license to broadcast and/or face significant fine.

(All of which I find truly pathetic and sad given the 1st Amendment.)

  9. These cuss words were not aired people. I listened to it live and it didn’t go through. There was a slight pause and Chris said no profanity please(or something to that effect). I would have never known he cursed if it wasn’t for Chris saying that.
