On Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver makes a very strong case for supporting your local daily newspaper—if for no other reason that local reporting keeps officials honest, and supports national reporting (like his). Oliver’s report also uses the Oregonian‘s struggles to stay afloat and chase after their “digital first” business plan, as a good example of what readers have lost and what’s replacing it: click bait. Here’s the money line from Oliver: “News organizations badly need leaders who appreciate that what’s popular isn’t always what’s most important.” Check this out—it’s very interesting. And funny! And scary.
