We’ve been reporting all kinds of news about local media people quitting and joining different papers recently so, hey, here’s some more scuttlebutt.

The Oregonian hired two well-known local reporters today, Nick Budnick and Beth Slovic. Nick Budnick used to work at Willamette Week and did some great cops reporting for the Tribune, but quit in 2009 to cover Salem for the Bend Bulletin. He’s joining the Oregonian‘s enterprise team.

Beth Slovic covered schools and city hall for Willamette Week, most recently working on a bunch of stories about Congressman David Wu. Slovic is heading over to cover city hall for the O now.

It also looks like the pair is about the get married. Does this technically count as marrying a coworker? Anyway, congrats to them.

Sarah Shay Mirk reported on transportation, sex and gender issues, and politics at the Mercury from 2008-2013. They have gone on to make many things, including countless comics and several books.

  1. You don’t mention what the consistency is, FC. Slightly overcooked tapioca pudding, left out on the counter overnight?

  2. Ah, yes. Beth Slovic, of “Hey Greg Oden shouldn’t you be proud the nation’s seen your large genitalia?” fame.

I didn’t know the Oregonian was hiring? I thought they were in panic layoff mode.

  3. I think they’re in panic we just lost Brent Walth mode, Aaron! But you’re right, hopefully this is good news for their stability.

I think all these people are really great journos and I’m happy for them. Thanks for the scuttle, Sarah.

  4. I always think her articles sound like she’s out to get someone and when people don’t accept her point of view she really tries to make that person look bad.

  5. Hate to see WW lose her, but Beth’s a score for the O. She scooped them on Gordon Smith’s illegal hiring AND David Wu’s romp in the tiger costume. Plus she’s a fluent Spanish speaker and sharp on what the kids are doing.

  6. Nick and Beth are two of the best reporters in the state, it’s great they found each other and a place to do even more good journalism.
