The Oregonian has picked up on Saltzmangate. Now the Commissioner is reneging on his position yesterday, citing shyness as a reason not to have made the disclosure:

“In retrospect, maybe I should have done that (disclose his relationship),” he said, but he’s shy and the thought of announcing his private life and outing someone “who is not affected by this grant whatsoever didn’t seem appropriate.”

Update, 2:08: Jack Bogdanski also points out that Saltzman has been endorsed by a child molester. Awkward.

Matt Davis was news editor of the Mercury from 2009 to May 2010.

  1. ‘outing someone “who is not affected by this grant whatsoever didn’t seem appropriate.”‘

Liz Burns is a “development specialist” at a non-profit. For those unfamiliar, this is referring to “development of funding sources”, i.e. someone out looking for donations and grants.

To say that someone working in development for an agency is “not affected” by bringing in $600k is DEEPLY disingenuous. I have not a doubt that two days ago she would have gladly told anyone that this grant was one of her biggest acheivements on the job.

  2. Yeah, you’ve sullied the reporting by mentioning BoJerk. Even if he did point out something heretofore unnoticed, he’s a joke, and including his insight makes a joke of your work.

  3. The bigger story is the endorsment of Saltzmen by a known child molester. That is so much more telling of his (Salty’s) character then the grant giving.

What a f**cking clueless weirdo Dan is.

  4. Really, Matt. I know you aren’t from this country and all, but bringing Jack Bogdanski into an article will never strengthen said piece.

  5. Time to work on the “update” skills, apparently. The last one read like the work of a petty child, and this one nullifies any attempted point by referencing Bogdanski.
