As a child, I saw the first 48 seconds of this video on television—

—in which Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis STRAIGHT-UP LIED about hoverboards being real, claiming they’d “been around for years,” but “parents groups” had forbidden their use. This quickly became like, a major thing for me, a thing that I believed with the entirety of my earnest young being; I insisted to everyone who would listen that hoverboards were real, and there were secret warehouses full of them somewhere, and I cursed any and all parents groups, and I drew elaborate plans for magnetizing both roads and the bottom of my skateboard in order to make my own hoverboard. It wasn’t until an embarrassing number of years later that I realized that, possibly, perhaps, it had all been a lie.

I still get kind of worked up about it.

Anyway, Zemeckis’ dickishness aside, Mattel has finally decided to cash in on the fact that the hoverboards we were promised as eager youths are still not available. Their solution: a “Back to the Future™ Hoverboard” prop replica, which you can now conveniently pre-order for me for a mere $120.

My birthday is right around the corner; I think buying me a hoverboard is probably the least you can do. Once again, you can pre-order me a hoverboard right here.

Via Gizmodo, and thanks to my buddy Dave for the heads up. (“I would get this for your birthday if I was not such a cheap bastard.” —Dave)

  1. I went down the same exact path in life, believing the same clip. For some reason I remember it originally airing on HBO.

  2. I remember watching that clip with my parents. I whipped around, probably with comical levels of accusation in my eyes, and they both threw up their hands: “Nononononono he’s lying!”
