Movies exist to satiate those desires that we can’t fill ourselves. Like it or not, we watch them to be voyeurs. Lately, there is a certain desire reflected in films that deviates from the usual. Nope, it’s not sex, violence, or sci-fi fantasy–it’s the desire to Fuck The System. Luckily, no one has to cheat on tax returns or become an activist anymore. Just watch these flicks, the worlds of “based on true a true story,” where just one normal person can battle through governmental red tape, end welfare, take down the patriarchy, and feed starving children!
The Hurricane (1999)–Despite his abusive upbringing, Denzel
Washington remains a balanced, healthy, and happy Buddhist warrior, waiting
patiently until the day that the great white hope changes the constitution and
alters the injustice of his life sentence.
Erin Brockovich (2000)–Did you know that you don’t have to
go to law school anymore in order to sue giant water companies that have been
polluting the environment for years? Nope, all you need is a couple of miniskirts
and a size D bra, and you too can become an environmentalist hero!
The Insider (1999)–Feeling bad about smoking? Not to worry,
because one noble man worked together with some even more noble journalists
in order to reveal the fact that it’s not your fault that you smoke!
Light ’em up!
