Someday, in some beautiful future, American (or Italian!) studios will start making westerns again. WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY IT SHALL BE. Until then, we’re stuck with Sergio Leone Blu-rays and endless Deadwood rewatches. Oh! And a Japanese remake of Unforgiven that looks fucking great!

Nice work, Japan! Pretty sure that after Seven Samurai The Magnificent Seven and Yojimbo A Fistful of Dollars, you guys are entitled to remake as many of our westerns as you damn well please.

Alas, this probably won’t ever hit American theaters, because Americans prefer eating garbage.

  1. Moviegoers have grown tired of monsters/aliens destroying famous cities. Plus, you should never underestimate the drawing power of 90’s era SNL Alums

  2. Well, wasn’t Tampopo a remake of just about every western made? Shane in particular?
And the funny thing is Ken Watanabe was in that super-great film too.
I personally think Richard Linklaters ‘Slacker’ owes one hell of a lot to Tampopo too, structure-wise.
