I always feel uncomfortable when I’m at a job where the powers that be try to evoke feelings of togetherness by suggesting the company is a “family.” This to me evokes childhood memories of spending a great deal of time in a small room pouring over baseball statistics and playing Super Mario Brothers while on the other side of the door was a level of dysfunction too overwhelming for me to enthusiastically participate in. Then this makes me think that “family” could be a spot-on definition of my given workplace; small room, baseball statistics, video games and all. The crucial difference: I could quit or be fired from my job when it inevitably becomes apparent that I’m there for a paycheck and little else. How can I manufacture concern and interest when they simply don’t exist?

You’re just gonna have to learn to fake it. After about 20 years you’ll rise to the level where you can drink Tanqueray-and-tonics at lunch and play Super Mario Brothers in your office all afternoon. Then you’ll retire, and eventually die. Deal with it.

I like it and can only say hang in there and make the best of it. I bet your company also has lots of parties during lunch hour where everyone brings a covered dish. You may be expected to work through lunch, and not get paid.
Maybe you have a supervisor you know is needy,alcoholic,drug addicted and of course calls you from time to time with their personal problems. I bet you have horny old men Board of Directors that keep getting promoted and no one knows why. Enough about my take on big family companies and their make believe Fourtune 500 dreams.
