Last night, I accompanied the News Intern to see Tilly and the Wall, the band of tap dancing hot people from Omaha. What made the night interesting, however, were the opening acts, Southern Belle and World’s Greatest Ghosts. They were like the platonic forms of those bands that play in the student unions of liberal arts colleges all over the country that are, like, in the background, while you are downing a tall boy of PBR and trying to mack on that hottie from your lit theory course.

Since the lighting was all off, in lieu of actually taking a photograph, the News Intern got out her snazzy notebook and drew pictures of both keyboardists to compare and contrast. This adorable fellow is from World’s Greatest Ghosts.

This very accessorized young thing is the keyboardist/singer of Southern Belle:

Don’t get me wrong, both bands were super cute and I genuinely liked a lot of their songs, but it was as if they read an encyclopedia article on indie rock bands and decided to create one using this easy step by step guide: 1) go to Jackpot Records, 2) buy Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone by the Unicorns and get inspired, 3) procure a female bassist, 4) don ironic head gear (baseball caps, bandannas, homemade Indian headdresses, headbands from American Apparel, pieces of yarn…), 5) Write choruses consisting of you yelling declarative non-sequiturs like, “We built our houses on sand” and “The dinosaurs are newly wed.”

Yeah, the music was good, but I couldn’t wash off that feeling (even after that pipe burst and spewed brownish water all over the 21+ section…) that I had heard/seen it all before.

Before I go, let me present this guy because I believe that I am in love with him.

  1. i think you just nailed the physical description of about 85% of bands that come from portland/listened to modest mouse/pixies/built to spill/k records.
