The Gossip‘s Music For Men won’t be out until June—oh wait, make that October for us Yanks—but it seems that the first single, “Heavy Cross,” has made its way to the internets.
No hateration on our part, “Heavy Cross” pretty much kills it. Sounding exactly like what you’d expect from a slick big budget Gossip single, it has all the components—disco beats, sharp guitar lines, Beth Ditto’s powerful set of pipes—to make it a hit. Enjoy it now, before we’re told to take it town and go play with our dolls instead.

The Gossip – “Heavy Cross”
End Hits: Does anyone else think the opening guitar line sounds like something from the Chromatics?

oh right, “dance punk”. nobody’s done that yet.
Chunty, good luck only listening to music that no one’s ever done before. You’re gonna need it!
“End Hits: Does anyone else think the opening guitar line sounds like something from the Chromatics?”
in that is only a SLIGHT variation on the Knight Rider theme?
but ROM, do we really need another Franz Ferdinand? I mean, their mediocre rehashings are just barely off the pop charts these days.
though I suppose hipsters are still dancing ironically at Holocene.
Band of misogynists
I think the opening sounds like Fleetwood Mac.
I just listened to the new Franz Ferdinand yesterday, and I think it’s pretty good (note: I have not listened to whatever albums came between the first one and this one). And the remixes at the end of the album (or the extended version of the album) are cool. I think they’re good enough songwriters to not just be, like, a crappier Alphaville, or whatever some people say about them.
Holocene also has gay dance nights that are taken up by a lot of “non-threatening” straight guys who want to come across like they are NOT on the prowl.
But if your argument here is that since dance punk has been done before, then people are now only able to enjoy on an ironic level because it’s less legit than before, no matter how fun or catchy this new track is… then I, I don’t know, I think you’re over-estimating the “hipsters.”
I definitely get the stevie nicks vibe, but its kinda workin for me.
