Another week, another Mercury music section to read while you shed a red, white, and blue tear while viewing the most patriotic mugshots ever. God bless this great nation of ours.

We pay tribute to Hush Records and the respected local label’s ten year anniversary. Contributors include a lineup of past/present Hush artists, plus one nifty portrait from Carson Ellis.

Laura Gibson – “Hands In Pockets”

Featuring Alan Sparhawk from Low, the sprawling rockers in Retribution Gospel Choir do all sort of things that his other band can’t do. Hey, I made it this far without making a Mormon joke! I am so proud of myself. Time for a cookie.

Retribution Gospel Choir – “Breaker”

Some artists are dedicated to the delicate craft of explaining their music as eloquently as possible during interviews. Others do them while chowing down on a kosher pickle while in sitting in a kiddie pool. I assume you can take a guess at which category King Khan and the Shrines fall under.

King Khan and the Shrines – “Torture”

A product of “The Group,” a Northern California commune, Liz Harris of Grouper creates ethereal music that captures that “waking up in my own bedroom in the middle of the night and not knowing where I am” feeling. It’s like dementia, but way cooler than when grandpa had it.

Grouper – “Invisible”

Young lovers rejoice for the vintage romance of the The Old Believers: The best band ever from Kenai, Alaska. Yeah, you heard me the Bumping Uglys, I don’t care how many Battle of the Bands contests you have won.

The Old Believers – “Granny’s Song”

End Hits: Unlike Jesse Jackson, we like Barack Obama’s nuts just the way they are.
