  1. This isn’t humorous parody, this is ageist, and race-baiting. Try harder. You need to incorporate some kind of content that would separate your writing from that of someone who simply hates their subject. We had thought about advertising in the Mercury, but would not if this remains your style.

  2. Good lord, kids, is that all you got? Ageism with a dash of racism? (Hint: If you’re trying to be “ironic,” at least try to make it funny.)

  3. Wow….since when is it legal to publish something under someone else’s name? How many people who don’t know the former mayer at all….will simply take this at face value? Shame on the Mercury…..I don’t have a problem with expressive rights…..but this is rude and ridiculous…..and might have been mildly funny had the real writer had the balls to show his own face with a byline…..whatever the case…..you are just painting your own kettle blacker…..too bad

  4. I don’t find this humorous at all. But I never think it’s funny when individuals are attacked for their age or beliefs. It just makes you come off as youth-favoring, arrogant, mean spirited people with no manners. I don’t really care for him at all, but attacks like this are made by people who have no couth (look it up).

Also, are you attacking him BECAUSE he’s supporting the recall? If so, try not to behave like the typical self righteous over-educated, but non-thinking 20-somethings who tend to be so visible (and annoying) in Portland of late.

  5. I think this screams volumes about how crass and idiotic our culture and too many of it’s young people are. We don’t have the respect for our elders that we should, if we were smart–which we aren’t. Whether or not you agree or disagree with Mayor Tom Potter it is so very off color and disrespectful to engage in this kind of ageist, racist failed attempt at humor.

I sincerely hope that Tom Potter consults with an attorney because it seems to you have committed several liable actions.

  6. Oh my goodness, you people really need to lighten up. I thought it was kind of funny. Relax.

I’m willing to write off the surprisingly poor reception that this New Column has received as being one of those “De gustibus non est disputandum” moments (hey Bright Light: look it up). But I do feel compelled to observe that some of you are complaining about the degradation of our culture by ageism and some ambiguous milieu of Portlandy 20-somethings while simultaneously clamoring for lawyers in a hyperlitigious society. That, dear Blogtownies, is irony of the first order …almost reaching Hipster proportions–and if you had a hard time with this, I don’t think that’s company that you’ll want to keep.

…It’s also worth noting that some of the funniest things (and, while not the case here, many salient social and political points, too) have been perceived by the finger-waggers as “uncouth.” (Bright Light: why do I need to look up a word that is in perfectly common usage among literate people?) I would encourage all of us to be a bit more judicious with our outrage–where, why, and how it is directed are important considerations, and not to be wasted on obviously satirical pieces in a little alt-weekly.

  7. oh stop. The article was completely stupid and deserves every tomato lobbed. Anger is the appropriate response. I hope Tom Potter sues your pants off.
