UPDATE 9:30 PM
By and large it looks like tonight's protest is over, thanks to the rain and what appeared to be an overzealous reaction by the PPB to what seemed to be overall a peaceful protest. We'll be checking back in tonight sporadically to see if anything new develops. Otherwise we'll see you all for the Women's March tomorrow, and to hear what the PPB has to say for themselves. Should be interesting!

UPDATE 9:15 PM
According to various sources, Pioneer Courthouse Square is mostly empty now—though we're unsure if marchers have reconvened elsewhere.

UPDATE 9:00 PM
Mayor Ted Wheeler and the PPB will have some explaining to do tomorrow.

Meanwhile in Seattle...

UPDATE 8:53 PM
After a strong (probably unnecessarily strong) show of force, even more police and riot cops are heading toward Pioneer Courthouse Square.

UPDATE 8:46 PM
Police are gassing EVERYBODY.

UPDATE 8:40 PM

UPDATE 8:34 PM

If it makes anyone feel better, our protest made the Rachel Maddow Show tonight!

UPDATE 8:29 PM

UPDATE 8:20 PM
Cops continue to threaten remaining crowd with gas grenades and flash bangs.

UPDATE 8:09 PM

UPDATE 8:02 PM
And as feared, there goes the tear gas...

UPDATE 7:56 PM
Despite (or maybe because?) the crowd singing Smash Mouth, police are getting serious about the trouble in front of the Nines hotel.

UPDATE 7:54 PM

UPDATE 7:49 PM
And it looks like the organizer of tonight's protest is calling it... at least for those who want to listen.

MEANWHILE... Trouble in front of the Nines hotel...

UPDATE 7:44 PM

UPDATE 7:39 PM
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!

UPDATE 7:32 PM

UPDATE 7:25 PM
Police continue to push protesters back toward Pioneer Courthouse Square...

UPDATE 7:21 PM

UPDATE 7:08 PM

UPDATE 7:02 PM
Yep, things are definitely starting to disintegrate...

UPDATE 6:55 PM

MEANWHILE... Police are saying that "bottles and road flares" are being thrown at them.

UPDATE 6:48 PM

MEANWHILE the O is reporting that two protesters have been arrested after refusing to leave the middle of Burnside.

UPDATE 6:44 PM
And TriMet follows through with yesterday's threat...

UPDATE 6:38 PM
And here come the warnings...

The O reports a protester getting hit in the face by pepper spray... no detainments yet.

UPDATE, 6:28 PM
Mmmmmm... that's an interesting choice of words.

Meanwhile back in Portland, the "rulers" have paused at Naito and Morrison, with cops trying to turn them on to Taylor.

UPDATE, 6:22 PM

UPDATE, 6:20 PM

UPDATE, 6:12 PM:
The O is reporting that police have deployed tear gas and flash bangs at the base of the Burnside Bridge, but police are denying that.

UPDATE, 6:10 PM

UPDATE, 6:05 PM
According to reports, marchers have seemingly split into two groups, with one gathering around the entrance of the Steel Bridge, while another is moving down 2nd Ave. The march appears to have temporarily stalled.

UPDATE, 6:02 PM
Hey guys, it's your old pal Wm. Steven Humphrey taking over for my esteemed colleague Erik Henriksen here at Mercury Resistance & Solidarity Command Central™, where I will escort you through Donald Trump's "American carnage" for the rest of the evening. I hope he enjoys it!

But first a brief catch up of national news to provide some context: Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States this morning (ugh) just a few feet away from Hillary Clinton (gah) and what was possibly the smallest crowd to attend an inauguration in American history (SAD!).

His speech was divisive and terrible, naturally, and actually plagiarized the super-villain Bane from the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. (You can't make this stuff up, folks!) Huge protests are taking place in Washington, DC with smatterings of violence here and there. (ICYMI, Neo-Nazi Richard Spencer was punched in his stupid racist Nazi face by a protester while taping an interview, and it was GLORIOUS. Fuck you, Nazi.) Trump then sat down to sign his first executive order: to "ease the economic burdens of Obamacare," which means what exactly? It means someone close to you is going to die thanks to him, probably. Anyway, that's the day so far.

Now let's check in on PORTLAND, with Mercury reporters Dirk VanderHart, Doug Brown, and Joe Streckert.
