Here's your daily roundup of all the latest local and national news. (Like our coverage? Please consider making a recurring contribution to the Mercury to keep it comin'!)

• In case you somehow missed it, a member of the right-wing, violent Patriot Prayer movement was shot and killed this weekend following a Trump-encouraged caravan of supporters coming into Portland and firing mace and paint balls at protesters as local police stood by. Apparently there's a suspect (that has not been arrested yet), and Mayor Wheeler and Police Chief Lovell responded with a largely unsubstantial press conference. However, Wheeler did get off some sick burns at Trump, which made the national news... so there's that. We'll have more details as they become available, so stay tuned!

• So who are these Patriot Prayer people, anyway? They're getting a lot of airplay from the national media who seem very much unaware of their history of violence. And for those casting a sympathetic eye on Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson... you might want to read this first.

• Okay, fine. If you're still blaming Portland's protesters for things getting so bad, it's time for the best (and quickest) local history lesson you'll read all day.

• Some good news: Patriot Prayer and Proud Boy member Tusitala “Tiny” Toese (convicted of assaulting protesters) has FINALLY been arrested for violating his parole and was booked into the Clark County jail on Friday.

• Governor Kate Brown has a plan to quell violence at protests: send in even more cops, including state troopers and officers from Clackamas and Washington counties and Gresham. Note: The primary reason these protests are continuing is because Portland refused to substantially curb policing in the first place.

• Here's an interesting story about how 20 percent of protesters who were arrested at demonstrations this summer were charged with "Interfering with a Police Officer"—even though they weren't "interfering" in any meaningful way.

• Hopeful COVID news: According to the OHA, only 162 new positive cases were reported since yesterday, and one additional death. BUT! BUT! BUT! Labor Day weekend is coming up, which means lots of unnecessary gatherings and dangerous dummies walking around, so WASH YA DAMN HANDS, WEAR YA DAMN MASK, AND KEEP YA DAMN DISTANCE.

• BIG CONGRATS to the Blazers' Dame Lillard and his fiancée Kay'La Hanson who announced today they are going to be proud parents of twins!

• Today in "shit happens": "Oregon archery hunter gored in neck, killed by wounded elk."

IN NATIONAL NEWS:

• Trump, OF COURSE, praised his caravan of minions that drove into Portland and whose presence led to the death of one of his own supporters. And he's still planning on visiting Kenosha, Wisconsin—where Jacob Blake was shot in the back by police in front of his own children—even though the governor and mayor are asking him to stay away.

• During a speech in Pittsburgh, Joe Biden slammed Trump for "sowing chaos" and "stoking violence" in regards to the latest shootings at protests, adding, "Does anyone believe there will be less violence in America if Donald Trump is re-elected?"

• It looks like Postmaster General Louis DeJoy can expect a subpoena from the House after failing to provide previously requested details on his actions which have slowed down the mail and put the coming election in danger.

• The nation has passed more than 6 million cases of coronavirus... and what is President Trump doing about it? Nothing, unless you count spreading conspiracy theories.

• While kids tend to suffer less from COVID infections than adults, "hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus have increased at a faster rate in children and teenagers than among the general public." Another must read quote: "Black and Latino children who contract the virus are more likely to be hospitalized."
