Welcome to adulthood, Class of 2015!
Thinking of finally moving out of mom and dad’s basement? Sick of roommates? Want a sweet pad of your very own? Then don’t move to Portland.
Portland is officially the number one least affordable rental market for recent college grads in the whole country, according to a recent report released by residential real estate site Trulia.
As if the staggering amount of debt you likely graduated with wasn’t enough, Trulia has determined that, unless your newly-minted degree snags you a job where you make more than $47,000 a year, you’re probably going to need 1.5 roommates. Apparently the .5 indicates that three people would be sharing a two-bedroom apartment. Guess you can roshambo for the single room?
The solution? Move to St. Louis (rated the most affordable for recent grads), Dallas, or Houston, because Portland really doesn’t need anyone else like this guy.

Plenty of one bedroom apartments out there for between 700 – 800 dollars a month, especially in the outskirts of southwest Portland. Do I need to make 47,000 for that? Maybe these kids should have invested in something other than a liberal arts degree, or perhaps focused on a trade instead of wracking up thousands of dollars in unforgivable debt from the predatory college loan system?
Is it really all that common to get out of college and move into a one bedroom apartment in the city on your own? Everyone has roommates in their first post-high school/college apartment. And you sure as shit don’t have to pay $1200 a month unless you have some very specific parameters.
@Spindles – I know that was a facetious question, but just to get the info up here in case anyone disagrees with you – to qualify for a $700/month apartment you’d need to bring in $2,100/month before taxes. That’s an annual salary of just $25,200, or $12.60 per hour.
